What’s In The Bag: Rory McIlroy (March 2025 update)

By , Digital Editor. Tour golf nerd. World No.1 at three-putting.

What golf clubs and balls does Rory McIlroy use? Our in-depth review of what’s in the four-time major champion’s bag in 2025.

Rory McIlroy is a TaylorMade staff golfer and uses almost a full bag of TaylorMade clubs.

One of the most influential people in golf, the Northern Irishman hasn’t always played TaylorMade clubs and golf balls. He lifted his first two Majors (2011 US Open and 2012 US PGA) using Titleist clubs and the Pro V1 golf ball before joining Nike in 2013. He signed a ten-year deal rumored to be worth $150m with the American sports giant to use the brand’s clubs, ball, bag, clothing, and shoes.

Rory McIlroy signed with Nike ahead of the 2013 season.

In 2017, following Nike’s decision to leave the golf equipment market, McIlroy signed a ten-year clubs, ball, and bag deal with TaylorMade, worth $100m. He also renegotiated his Nike apparel and shoes agreement, signing a fresh ten-year contract worth a reported $200m.

Rory McIlroy has been a TaylorMade player since 2017.

He turned pro in 2007, shortly after he’d topped the world amateur ranking, and won his first European Tour title in 2009 at the Dubai Desert Classic. His first PGA Tour win followed in 2010 at the Quail Hollow Championship.

He’s gone on to win a further 26 PGA Tour victories, including the Players Championship, Tour Championship, and Arnold Palmer Invitational, and 18 European (DP World) Tour titles, including flagship events such as the BMW PGA Championship and Genesis Scottish Open. McIlroy’s most recent victory was the 2024 DP World Tour Championship, which also saw him crowned Race to Dubai champion and match Seve Ballesteros’ record of six Order of Merit titles.

What driver does Rory McIlroy use?

Rory McIlroy uses a TaylorMade Qi35 driver (9° at 8.25°) with a Fujikura Ventus VeloCore+ Black 6X shaft

McIlroy hadn't jumped into the TaylorMade Qi35 carbonwoods range at the start of the 2025 season, leaving many to question what the reason may be.

The fact is, these clubs are so well-suited to professionals by their fitting teams that it can be hard to stop playing something you trust so much. It seems McIlroy has finally made the switch in his game, though, showing he's built a trusting relationship with his new Qi35 driver.

Rory is playing the Qi35 'Dot' head - while there is still speculation on the exact specifications on what this variation is, if his Qi10 'Dot' driver last year is anything to go by, this Qi35 head will sit in-between the retail Qi35 driver and the Qi35 LS, for a balance of forgiveness and launch conditions that McIlroy wants to see.

Rory is also in the updated version of the Fujikura Ventus Black, the VeloCore+ edition, in his driver. It features a slightly softer handle than the previous version so, like his switch to Ventus TR Blue in the Stealth 2 driver a few years ago, he may be looking for a slightly easier time releasing the driver head in his timing.

What fairway wood does Rory McIlroy use?

Rory McIlroy uses a TaylorMade Qi35 3-wood (15°) with a Fujikura Ventus Black 8X shaft and a TaylorMade Qi10 5-wood (18°) with a Fujikura Ventus Black 9X shaft

Rory also switched into TaylorMade's latest Qi35 fairway woods for 2025, albeit a tour-exclusive bonded hosel version, having upgraded from his previous Qi10 models.

Rory’s 3-wood is pushed to maximize distance and accentuates the strength of his game – testing feedback from the Qi35 is now seeing Rory hitting 300 yards of carry with the new fairway wood, an extra 8-or-so yards over his previous model.

That creates a substantial gap in yardage when you jump from his 3-wood to his longest iron. Insert the 5-wood. It’s a club that needs to cover 290 to 250 yards – and every number in between!

Interestingly, McIlroy is still using the original versions of the Ventus Black shafts in his fairways despite upgrading the driver to the VeloCore+ edition. The first generation of Ventus Black was slightly stiffer in the handle, so he may be experimenting with feel or release in this instance.

McIlroy made a significant change ahead of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

“I just started to hit some chips with the TP5 instead of the TP5x and I really loved how I felt,” McIlroy told Golfweek.

“I hadn’t really tested the 2024 TP5, and I loved how it was reacting around the greens. And then I started hitting some 60, 70-yard shots with it, and it was coming off [with] much lower launch, but spinnier.”

“I just did some testing with [the 2024 TP5] and compared it to the TP5x,” he explained. “I used a 2019 TP5, and the difference between a 2019 TP5 and a 2019 TP5x was a lot in terms of the spin rates and the launch angles.

“[The 2024 TP5] seems to launch probably a degree lower for me, but the spin rate’s very, very similar, which I really like.”
