Nike’s entire Sumo golf club range is based around super-high MOI designs, which minimise twisting on off-centre contacts when you hit the ball. So it makes perfect sense to launch a matching set of Nike Sumo irons.

The Sumo irons have been made a little longer (from toe to heel) with wide soles and a low-profile head. This means everything possible has been done to increase the golf club’s perimeter weighting and MOI.

The nature of their design means they are aimed at the average club golfer who wants extreme forgiveness. The big golf club heads have plenty of weight positioned low and deep in the wide sole, to help get golf balls airborne more easily and to help improve consistency between shots.

In the past, deep cavity backs have meant a lack of feel, but this time around Nike has designed a soft vibration-dampening insert, to improve feel and dampen the unwanted shock waves created when you hit shots off-centre.

Nike reckons the Sumo irons have the highest MOI rating of any iron it has ever made. Which is quite a statement considering its Slingshot irons were extremely forgiving. This is made possible thanks to the extremely lightweight clubface, which allows additional weight to be relocated lower and deeper in the head.
