One of the best stories here is about a Scotsman, who you have probably never heard of. His name is Martin Laird, and he is an engaging 24-year-old from Glasgow.
For the past couple of years he has been playing on the Nationwide Tour in America, with considerable success. Last year he won the Clearwater Classic, and a couple of months ago he won again. Now, he has qualified for his first US Open and the sky seems to be the limit.
Realistically speaking, if he survives until Saturday morning, he should consider his week a huge success. He starts his championship at 12.41 p.m. local time, alongside Alex Prugh and Todd Fischer. The strength of his game is his long-hitting; which is exceptional even by today’s standards.
Today he played a practice round with Joey Sindelar and was taking every opportunity to ask the veteran American for advice. Watch out for his scores, because the boy has a future.
