June 4 Dougherty

Excited youngsters at Wentworth were treated to a masterclass session with Nick Dougherty, as part of the Golf Foundation’s plan to get kids into golf.

The Englishman is an ambassador for the Golf Foundation’s Junior Passport programme and was on hand as more than 500 children visited the Junior Golf Centre at the Virginia Water club during the recent BMW Championship.

He said: “It’s so important for golf to get young people involved in the game. I was lucky enough to be asked to be an ambassador for the Junior Golf Passport programme, which I was delighted to do because they gave me a lot of support when I was coming through the ranks.”

In a fun-packed session, Dougherty played Tri-Golf with local school children; part of England Golf’s Whole Sport Plan to get youngsters clued up on the basics of golf.

Mike Round, chief executive of the Golf Foundation, said: “We’d like to give a big thank you to Nick and also to the European Tour for providing us with the opportunity to showcase our work to all the families attending the championship.”
