Jean van de Velde will not be among the entrants at this year’s Open Championship due to ill health.
The tournament returns to Carnoustie next week where the mercurial Frenchman lost a playoff in 1999 after famously collapsing on the 72nd hole.
The 41-year-old has been hit by a mystery complaint which has dogged him since the Portuguese Open back in April.
Manager Jamie Cunningham told BBC Sport: “Jean doesn’t feel he can compete next week. In fact, he’s not sure he can play four rounds. He is obviously crushingly disappointed because he knows just what that means.”
Van de Velde underwent tests last week but they proved inconclusive.
