Miguel Angel Jimenez shot a splendid 2nd round 70 to emerge a serious Open Championship contender – and then took a hefty swipe at the recent smoking ban which has come into force.

“It’s bullshit hypocrisy,” he claimed. “People should be allowed to do what they want to do, especially as they pay their taxes.

“Allthough I understand the ban as regards official government buildings and places like that, it is not right in restaurants and bars. Nobody forces people to go to these places – they have a choice to go there or not.”

Jimenez admits: “Smoking is no good for you of course, it’s been proved . I know and realise that, but they are for sale but unfortunately you no longer can choose to smoke when and where you want to.”

The Spaniard, looking good at three-under-par for the championship, says he used to smoke cigarettes before switching to three whopping Cuban cigars a day. And, he points out, that situation will not change despite all the warnings. Ban or no ban…
