Daly to try TaylorMade Spider putter at Birkdale

Long John Daly has revealed that he will be trying a new putter this week at the Open Championship, with the new TaylorMade Spider getting its chance to perform in the hands of the bigman.

Daly, who won the Open at St Andrews in 1995, was not happy with his putting earlier in the season, and revealed he had been working with the manufacturer to try and get him zoned in for this week.

“I’m going to try the new TaylorMade Spider, the smaller Spider putter this week. I was working with they guys from Adidas TaylorMade, just something totally different that I’m not accustomed to.

“I’m not used to seeing anything that big behind the putter face. But it’s something different, and maybe it’s time I look at something different. We’ll just see what happens.”

But while Daly seemed fairly relaxed about his game, the amiable guy from Arkansas was less than impressed with Butch Harmon following the pair’s falling out after a reported incident in a Hooters bar at the Buick Open earlier in the year.

“I think his lies kind of destroyed my life for a little bit, the lies he said about being at Hooters tent and all this stuff. I just wish he wouldn’t have said the things he did.”
