Apr5 Masters par 3winner

By Chris Jones at Augusta

Masters champion Mark O’Meara won the traditional par-three contest here at Augusta National yesterday.

O’Meara, who has not won on the PGA Tour since lifting the Masters and British Open crowns in 1998, finished the nine holes at five-under, one shot clear of fellow American Zach Johnson and Britain’s Luke Donald.

David Toms and Rory Sabbatini delighted the large crowd each carding a hole-in-one. There have been 63 aces since the par-three tournament was first played in 1960.

It was Sabbatini’s first ace, and he said: “I’ve done pretty much everything humanly possible to make a hole in one, so it’s nice to finally make one. I now have a feeling of total relief!”

Toms, who aced the 142-yard fifth, said: “I hope this is a good omen. It was a perfect shot and just went right in.”
