Control your putting pace

4. Control your putting pace

If you are looking to protect a score or the pin is just too dangerous to go for, you should be happy just to find the middle of the green. But avoiding three putts on the summer’s lightning fast greens is not easy. The type of putt I’m faced with – up or downhill, straight or curved – dictates my level of aggression, but the key is practice. I’ll spend anywhere between half-an-hour and two hours every day working on my stroke and pace control so I feel confident once I’m out on the golf course.

 Perfect 10

Play better this summer

I love playing games of 10 in my practice. I’ll hit 10 putts from three metres and have to make seven of them. If not, I start over. I’ll then hit 10 long putts across the green and have to two-putt them all. Try it!

Alignment check

I favour games over drills, but one I always use at the start of a session is to put a cane or shaft down outside the ball to ensure I’m swinging the putter on line.
