Joost Luiten: ‘My four-step set-up process will give you the perfect posture’
Your posture is important because it helps to create so much of what happens after it in the swing. If your set-up is wrong, your swing is going to be wrong.
A lot of golfers can’t make a good takeaway, get into a good position at the top of the backswing, make a good downswing and so on because they’re already out of position at address. It’s like a massive domino effect. But if your set-up is right, you’re going to have a chance to make a good swing.
This is the step-by-step process I use on the range during every session to ensure I address the ball correctly every time. It’s that important.
#1: Aim your body correctly
Stand up straight with your feet shoulder-width apart and align your feet, hips, knees and shoulders all parallel to your target line. Use a clubshaft or alignment stick to double-check your aim.
#2: Create your angles
Tilt your upper body forwards from the hips while keeping your back straight until your shoulders get just forward of your toes. Add some knee flex, but keep your knees inside your toe line.
#3: Let your arms hang naturally
Now let your arms hang naturally. This is where you should grip the club. Not only does this set your hands the correct distance from your body, it ensures you’re standing the correct distance from the ball.
#4: Swing without compensation
If you have followed this four-step process correctly, you’ll have created the perfect body angles at address that will allow you to move the club throughout the swing without the need for compensations.
