Play The Ball Below Your Feet With Graeme McDowell
Last updated:
New US Open champion Graeme McDowell has just bagged his first major championship at Pebble Beach – where difficult lies are commonplace. Here he tells you how to play a shot with the ball below your feet:
This is a really tough shot because the ground is throwing your weight forwards, and you need to make a conscious effort to stay balanced. Stay on your toes, but don’t over-balance. What’s more, staying balanced at address is not enough; you need to stay balanced right through the swing.
Expect the ball to move from left to right; you need to aim well left of the target..
Make sure your grip is right at the end of your shaft. If you can lengthen your shaft you will go some way to minimising the effect of the slope. With a severe slope, I even have a bit of my hands off the shaft altogether.
