The BWM PGA Championship tees up the perfect Ryder Cup dress rehearsal for Luke Donald and his whole 12-man team at the fourth Rolex Series event of the DP World Tour from September 14-17, 2023.
Rome is calling, and by the time the trophy is raised on Sunday evening at the Wentworth Club, we will only be two weeks from knowing which side of the Atlantic has claimed golf’s most coveted bragging rights.
Headlining the field at Virginia Water’s historic West Course will be world number two and three, Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm, and the red-hot Viktor Hovland, fresh off the back of his dominant end to the 2023 FedExCup season.
The Norwegian went an astonishing 44-under across eight rounds to triumph at the final two playoff events (BMW and Tour Championship), with a 69 being his worst round!
A two-time Wentworth Champion himself (2011, 2012), Captain Donald will compete once more on the West Course fairways. This time alongside four of his five vice-captains, all hoping Hovland can sustain the momentum for just a few more weeks.
Together with ‘generational’ talent Ludvig Aberg, and a man in Nicolai Hojgaard who knows what it takes to win around the Marco Simone Club, there is a strong chance that Scandinavia’s northern mavericks will have a decisive role to play in Rome’s upcoming showdown.
Elsewhere in Europe
Irishman Shane Lowry will be looking to re-discover the form that saw him crowned 2022 champion last time out and will be joined by new teammates and fellow Major winners Matt Fitzpatrick and Ryder Cup veteran Justin Rose.
Completing the Team Europe presence in Surrey are debutants Robert MacIntyre and Sepp Straka, and home favorites Tommy Fleetwood and Tyrrell Hatton.
Arguably the unluckiest player missing out on a Captain’s Pick was Poland’s Adrian Meronk who will have more than a wedge to grind when he takes to the tee and is perhaps the one to watch for those looking to back an outsider.
The best of the rest
Former world number one and Masters champion Adam Scott joins fellow green jacket holder Danny Willet (a Wentworth winner himself), and 2021 champion Billy Horschel, in a field stacked with Tour-winning talent and experience from across Europe and beyond.
Those to have been there, done it (and still doing it), include Padraig Harrington, Thomas Bjorn, Francesco Molinari, and of course, Luke Donald himself, all of whom will be vying to prove they can still mix it with the best.
Recent Rolex Series winners also making their way to Wentworth include Frenchman Victor Perez, Australian Min Woo Lee, and Englishman Aaron Rai.

Golfing entertainment at its best
While Ryder Cup speculation will invariably dominate headlines, the BMW PGA Championship remains a flagship event on the DP World Tour, highlighted by its prominent positioning at the business end of the season in 2024’s new-look calendar with a record prize fund of $148.5 million.
Golfing festivities are set to commence with a relaxed practice day on Tuesday 12 before Wednesday’s star-studded Celebrity Pro-Am featuring Hollywood A-lister Tom Holland, football superstar Gareth Bale and England cricketers James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Harry Brook and Sir Andrew Strauss.
A vibrant spectator village will host world-class entertainment from music artists including Locksmith, Jax Jones, and The Wombats, performing across the week to bring together the best of sport and entertainment in this highly-anticipated festival of golf.
