Tiger Woods aside, few players (if any), have the same pulling power in the men’s professional game as Rory McIlroy.

Despite a fifth Major title eluding the Northern Irishman for over a decade now, Rory’s box office game continues to line fairways worldwide with fans trying to catch a glimpse of one of the best swings the game has ever seen.

And while signing off the year on a high with a Seve Ballesteros-equalling sixth European Order of Merit title, 2024 will still be remembered as the ‘one that got away’ in the eyes of many, missing out on a golden opportunity to break his Major drought at the US Open.

After the disappointment of delaying the launch of his TGL indoor golf league venture at the back end of 2023, Rory hit the ground running on the DP World Tour in January with title number 17 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, following a T2 result the week prior.

Rory McIlroy won his fourth Dubai Desert Classic at the start of 2024.

Kicking on back in the US proved more challenging, however, with McIlroy struggling to register a top-20 finish. A second-round 77 at Augusta killed off any hope of a Masters challenge, with Rory eventually finishing 15 shots adrift of Green Jacket winner Scottie Scheffler.

It wasn’t before May that McIlroy’s season turned a corner, partnering Shane Lowry to victory at the Zurich Classic before notching up a 26th PGA Tour win at the Wells Fargo Championship the next week.

He was peaking just in time for the congested Major season, which is why his T12 finish at the PGA Championship was underwhelming, particularly given his title-winning credentials around Valhalla. However, that disappointment paled in significance to the US Open heartbreak to come.

Rory McIlroy missed two short putts in the space of three holes to blow US Open chance

After a brief sabbatical, Rory returned to Europe with a T4 finish at the Scottish Open before being beaten up by the weather at Royal Troon, missing the cut to round off a tenth straight Majorless season.

An Olympic medal at the Le Golf Nationale would have perhaps been a nice consolation, but that wasn’t to be either, finishing T5 and two shots back from bronze medalist Hideki Matsuyama.

There was still a boatload of cash to be played for at the FedExCup Playoffs though, and despite an uncharacteristic third-from-last finish at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, T11 and T9 results at the BMW Championship and Tour Championship finale helped top up the bank balance.

Next came two back-to-back runner-up medals at the BMW Championship and Irish Open as McIlroy returned to DPWT action. Be it for the odd bounce of a ball here and there, Rory may have been celebrating one of his best seasons ever with eight titles and a fifth Major.

Despite a year of mixed fortunes, McIlroy’s influence on golf remains as strong as ever. In October, alongside dad Gerry at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Rory was grouped for rounds with Jay Monahan and Yasir Al-Rumayyan – the men representing each side of the PGA-LIV merger.

McIlroy entered the season-ending DP World Tour playoffs in the Middle East with a healthy advantage at the top of the Race to Dubai standings, and following a third-place finish at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, a sixth Order of Merit title was looking ominous.

And a week later, McIlroy signed off 2024 in style, securing the Race to Dubai crown with a two-stroke victory at the DP World Tour Championship, edging him closer to his ultimate goal of being the best European golfer of all time.

It was McIlroy’s fourth win of a highly consistent, yet ultimately Majorless 2024. However, all the signs suggest he is closer than ever to adding that elusive win No.5 to his resume in 2025.

Rory McIlroy wins the 2024 DP World Tour Championship and a sixth Race to Dubai title.

Here’s when and where we can expect to see Rory McIlroy in action, including the confirmed TGL fixtures for his Boston Common Golf franchise that get underway in January.
