I walked every hole at Wentworth to find you the best viewing areas for the BMW PGA Championship

If you’re coming to watch the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth this week, then this is the guide for you. I’ve walked every hole to find you the ideal spectator spots to see the best of the golf.

The BMW PGA Championship kicks off at Wentworth this week, and there’s a stellar line-up of players heading to tee it up on the West Course in search of the trophy. 2023’s Champion Ryan Fox will be looking to defend his title as he heads out at 8.45am on Thursday morning with Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose.

The West Course is a Harry Colt design that opened in 1927. The 7,302-yard track has an incredible tournament history, hosting the 1953 Ryder Cup and, just three years later, the Canada Cup.

On Tuesday afternoon (which was practice day for the players in the tournament), I headed out down the first hole on a mission to find you the best vantage points to ensure you see the most golf possible if you’re coming down to Surrey this week. This is what I found.

Wentworth First Tee

1st tee

It’s always worth finding a spot behind the first tee at Wentworth, as it’s one of the most scenic and impressive opening holes in golf. Most of the players will be looking to hit a driver or wood here, so you’ll get to see some seriously spectacular shots heading away from the clubhouse. You’re also only a stones throw from the putting green, so place yourself on the right side of the tee, or in the grandstand, to see some big names practicing before their rounds, too. The Championship village is close by for food, drink, and merchandise, and the driving range is only a few minutes away. If you’re looking to attend the BMW PGA Championship, but not do too much walking around, this is a location I would highly recommend you base yourself.

Wenthworth's second green

2nd green and 3rd tee

If you’re looking to head out onto the course, then the first great spectator spot is between the second green and third tee. Place yourself to the left of the tree that protects the second green, and you’ll be able to see players hole out on the par-3 before getting the longer clubs out to hit drives and fairway woods from the third tee. It’ll also be a shady spot under the tree, so great if you’re wanting to avoid the sunshine that’s forecast this week.

Wentworth's 6th green

6th green

The next few holes are pretty tree-lined, and don’t have many great spots to get close to the action until you get to the 6th hole. Place yourself to the right hand side of the green, next to the bunker. You won’t see much approach shot action from this position, or any tee shots, however the ropes are extremely close to the green-side sand. So you’ll be within mere meters of the likes of Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood if they happen to land their second shot in the bunker.

Wentworth's 7th hole grandstand

7th hole grandstand

The 7th hole on the West Course is a stunning par four, and there’s a large grandstand right next to the green. Get here early to secure your spot, and you should be able to see the entire hole’s play, as the grandstand is in the perfect position allowing you to see the tee, too. The 8th tee is also next to the grandstand, so find a seat on the far left hand side and you’ll be able to watch the tee shots from there, too.

Wentworth's 11th green

11th green and 12th tee

One of my favourite spots on the course was between the 11th green and the 12th tee. The ropes are incredibly near to the green, meaning you get up really close to the action. It’s quite a dog-leg though, so you wouldn’t be able to see much of the approach shots into the green here. However, if you spin round on the spot, you can also see the tee shots from the 12th tee, ensuring you see some driver action.

The 14th grandstand at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth

14th grandstand

Par three grandstands are always a great place to base yourself for a day’s action at a Championship. They’re full of atmosphere and the crowds will always be loud. The 14th is an up-hill hole, meaning you’ll see every moment of play from tee to green, and there’s a small area to the right of the grandstand with food and drink outlets, meaning you won’t need to go far for anything you may need for the day.

The grandstand on the 16th at Wentworth

16th grandstand

The grandstand seating area on the 16th hole is small, which makes your view of the players feel more intimate that some of the other holes on the course. The hole is a dog-leg, but only slight, so you’ll be able to see their approach shots as well as the action on the green, which is incredibly close to you sat in the stand. Be sure to get here and take your spot early though, as I mentioned, it’s a very small seating area.

The 18th hole grandstand at the BMW PGA Wentworth

18th grandstand

This guide wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the amphitheatre that is the grandstand on the final hole. You may not be able to see an awful lot of play from here, but it’s arguably one of the most exciting holes on the course, and with be full of atmosphere all week, especially as the leaders head down the final stretch on Sunday. If you’re lucky enough to have hospitality tickets, then you’ll be able to experience one of the best views on the course, alongside the 18th green.
