Jupiter Links vs Los Angeles: Tiger set to star in his own show for TGL Matchday 2

Tiger Woods is ready to add some bite at TGL Matchday 2.

Everything you need to know ahead of TGL’s second clash between Jupiter Links and Los Angeles Golf Club where Tiger Woods will take the stage for his debut.

The Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL) finally teed off last week for the inaugural match between New York and The Bay Golf Club under the watchful, and understandably anxious eyes of co-founders Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. Thankfully for the pair, TGL’s year-delayed debut went down without any technological malfunctions or major confusion over the unique format and rules, generally receiving a warm reaction.

Almost one million prime-time viewers tuned in to see elite golf take its first steps into the ‘sim world’ at the tech-infused SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. And with Woods in line to make his debut this week, TGL’s stakeholders will be quietly confident of building on that success and showcasing the sport to the new audiences it hoped to attract.

“This was just a dream conjured up,” said Tiger as he called Matchday 1. “This isn’t golf as we know it, but it is golf, and a chance to showcase our sport to a new audience and take it to another stratasphere. I’m excited to see this dream come true.”

There have been few and far opportunities for golf fans to see Woods in action over the past few years with four consecutive rounds proving a step too far as the 15-time major champion continues his recovery to full fitness. Perhaps TGL will be the platform that allows the GOAT to continue his domination of the game into the 21st century.

Which players have been selected?

Tiger will be joined by Max Homa and Kevin Kisner from his Jupiter Links roster with Tom Kim sitting this one out, instead over on the West Coast for The American Express on the PGA Tour.

Los Angeles will open their account with Collin Morikawa, Justin Rose, and Sahith Theegala. Tommy Fleetwood competes at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour.

The first nine holes will see the teams play alternate shot triples before two holes of singles action each with Woods vs Rose, Morikawa vs Kisner, and Theegala vs Homa.

What holes will be played for Jupiter Links vs Los Angeles?

Each TGL fixture features 15 virtual holes from a bank of 30 custom-designed holes specially created by Beau Welling Design, Nicklaus Design, and Pizá Golf, in collaboration with TGL and Full Swing. An exciting element of TGL is the removal of real-world barriers to golf course design, typically restricted by budgets, environmental issues, planning permissions, and availability of land.

The 15-hole virtual course will remain the same as Matchday 1:

Jupiter Links vs Los Angeles: Who will win?

New York went in as slight favorites before their 9-2 drubbing by The Bay in Matchday 1, highlighting just how difficult predicting results is going to be in golf’s ‘sim world’ until the season gets a bit deeper. The bookmakers are a little bolder with this one, however, pricing Los Angeles as 4/7 favorites to take the win.

How are points awarded in TGL?

Similar to professional hockey, TGL will use a points-based system for regular season matches. One point is awarded for winning a hole, but there are no carryovers, and a tie is worth zero points.

Each team also has the option of using ‘the hammer’, which increases the value of a hole by one point when active. Possession of ‘the hammer’ changes each time it’s used, so there’s strategy involved in pressing home an advantage or putting an opponent under pressure.

A team win is worth two points, while an overtime loss still receives one point – a similar system to the NHL. A ‘regulation’ defeat earns zero points.

In the event of a tie at the end of the 15-week season, the tiebreaker will be decided by total holes won. That’s why all 15 holes will be played in every match, even if the winner is decided earlier.
