Who is playing for Team Europe in the 2023 Solheim Cup?

The 12 player European team which captain Suzann Pettersen will be hoping can retain the Solheim Cup with victory in Spain.

The 18th Solheim Cup takes place at Finca Cortesin from 22 September – 24 September 2023, the first time the event has even been held in Spain.

Suzann Pettersen the European captain will be hoping her group of 12 can run riot in the shadow of the Estepona mountains to retain the Solheim Cup and continue the run on home soil.

The Europeans are strong but will have to overcome an excellent American lineup full of Major Champions as they look to win their third Solheim Cup in a row.

Celine is used to nothing but success at the Solheim Cup, winning five of her seven matches and being on the winning team in both 2019, and 2021. Can she make it three from three? Boutier has enjoyed arguably her best year on tour, her first major success came in her home country at The Amundi Evian Championship, and backed that up with two more wins at the LPGA Drive On Championship and The FREED Group Women’s Scottish Open. She is certainly in the hat for the Player of the Year conversation.

Carlota Ciganda – Solheim Cup record and stats

The Spaniard has plenty of experience in the Solheim Cup and has played in the last five outings with the European team and has been part of the winning side three of those times. With a drop off in form towards the end of 2022 Carlota snuck outside the top 50 in the Rolex Rankings which has been her lowest since 2015. With some good form in 2023, a win on the Aramco Team Series in Florida, and four top 10s on the LPGA, she got back up to No. 33 in the Rolex World Rankings and qualified for the Solheim Cup.

Gemma Dryburgh – Solheim Cup record and stats

Gemma Dryburgh is a Solheim Cup rookie this year in Spain and was one of Suzann’s Captain’s picks. She picked up her maiden LPGA victory last year in Japan and followed that up this season by making 14 out of 16 cuts with one top-ten finish. Not an overly successful season in terms of victories but with her consistency in performance and accuracy off the tee, seventh on the LPGA in driving accuracy, we can see why she got the look in from Pettersen for a spot in the team.

Linn Grant – Solheim Cup record and stats

Grant made her mark in 2022 as one of the best players in the world. The Swede has racked up an amazing six wins in the last two seasons of which five come on the LET. Some vaccination issues deemed her unable to play in the US in 2022. When she finally made her debut she finished third and then eventually got her first LPGA title in July at the Dana Open. With her recent success, she qualified through The Rolex World Rankings where she currently sits No. 19 in the world.

With three Solheim Cups in the bag, Georgia Hall will be hoping to keep her successful run going and win it for the third time. Georgia has been lacking some success in the past couple of years and had some unfortunate runner-up positions this season. Thanks to her five LPGA and two LET top-10 finishes, she has been in great form all year and made it into the team through her No. 16 position in the Rolex World Rankings.

Caroline Hedwall was an outside chance to get into the Solheim Cup as she is currently ranked 120th in the world and has only had a few top-10 finishes in the 2023 season. Having played in four Solheim Cups and been on the winning team three times, her Solheim experience will make her a valued voice in the team room, especially with a trio of Swedes on this year’s squad.

Charley Hull made her Solheim Cup debut when she was just 17 years of age as the youngest competitor in the event’s history. She shocked USA team veteran Paula Creamer in singles that year, beating her, 5 and 4. This year in Spain will be her sixth Solheim Cup, and she certainly knows how to get points on the board for the Europeans having not had a losing record in five previous appearances. Hull is ranked 9th in the world and had three top-3 finishes this season and is going into the competition in top form.

Leona Maguire – Solheim Cup record and stats

There have not been many better starts to a Solheim Cup campaign than Leona’s in 2021. Without a loss, with four wins and one half, she blew the Americans away and will be hoping to carry that on this year in Andalucia. Maguire has four top 10s on the LPGA and backed them up with victory at The Meijer LPGA Classic. The Irishwoman has a superb all-round game and is ranked inside the top 30 on tour in putting average, greens in regulation, and driving accuracy.

Anna Nordqvist (Playing Assistant Captain) – Solheim Cup record and stats

In seven straight appearances, the Swede has earned 15.5 points in 27 matches. This year, she’ll take on a rather different role in the European team as a playing vice-captain after securing the final automatic qualifying spot through the Rolex Rankings. Nordqvist will be hard to beat again, as this year, she’s third on the LPGA in greens in regulation percentage. Ranked 37th in the world and with three top-10 finishes under her belt this year she will be one to watch when she’s on the course.

Emily Kristine Pedersen – Solheim Cup record and stats

The Dane rebounded from a poor winless Solheim Cup debut by going 3-1-0 in 2021. Captain Suzann Pettersen is putting plenty of faith in Emily as she hasn’t won an individual event since 2020 and doesn’t have an LPGA top-10 this season. She’s managed to get top-10 in driving distance and greens in regulation and will look to use those skills en route to another impressive Solheim Cup showing as a captain’s pick.

Sagstrom hasn’t had the season she hoped for with only two top-10s in 15 LPGA starts this season and not much better on the LET either with one top-10 finish. The Swede has a Solheim record which isn’t what she would like it to be, either. But as one of Suzann’s four captain’s picks, she’ll be making her Solheim debut on European soil, having played in 2017, and 2021 both in the USA. Madelene is averaging 273 yards off the tee and is hitting 69% of her greens in regulation, she should be a threat against anyone in Spain.

Maja Stark – Solheim Cup record and stats

Age: 23
World ranking: 40

Solheim Cups played: None

Stark is a Solheim Cup rookie and she may have only turned professional in 2021, but the former Oklahoma State star has more than a half-dozen pro wins and boasts five top-10s in 16 starts this season on the LPGA, plus a win on the LET in Morocco. Maja is the youngest competitor on the European squad and looks to add a Solheim win to her growing list of accomplishments.
