Rory McIlroy files for divorce from wife Erica Stoll

After seven years of marriage, Rory McIlroy has filed for divorce from his wife Erica Stoll, just days before the US PGA Championship.

Reports from American celebrity news site TMZ have been confirmed that Rory McIlroy has filed for divorce from his wife Erica Stoll. The pair have been married for seven years, but on the eve of the US PGA Championship, the 35-year-old has decided to begin the termination of his marriage.

The filing is reported to have been placed in Florida, where McIlroy and Stoll live, on Monday – the day after his fourth victory at the Wells Fargo Championship.

In 2020, Rory and Erica had their only child, Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, three years after tying the knot.

Rory and Erica met in 2012 at the Ryder Cup. At that time Erica was working for the PGA and McIlroy was a part of Team Europe. When the two met, the Northern Irishman was in a relationship with tennis superstar, Caroline Wozniacki, but as that relationship ended his one with Erica began.

The four-time Major Champion will hope to become a five-time Major Champion this week at Valhalla Golf Club. He has fond memories of this course given that it was where he won his most recent Major Championship – the 2014 US PGA Championship. Despite news of the split breaking on the eve of the US PGA Championship, McIlroy continues to be one of the favorites for the tournament.
