Wyndham Championship 2024 preview: Field, betting odds, how to watch, and tee times

With Olympic medals dished out in Paris, the PGA Tour gets straight back to business at the Wyndham Championship where Lucas Glover defends at the final regular season event.

Scottie Scheffler’s glittering 2024 continued as he produced a stunning final round of 62 to edge Tommy Fleetwood to the Olympic gold medal at Le Golf National. The final round in Paris saw plenty of drama, with a host of players holding the lead throughout Sunday, but the two-time Masters champion performed when it mattered most to secure a remarkable seventh win of the year.

Thoughts now turn to the final PGA Tour event of the regular season, the Wyndham Championship, which will take place at Sedgefield Country Club for the 17th consecutive year.

The tournament was founded in 1938, initially called the Greater Greensboro Open until 1988. The next 20 years saw three different name changes before Wyndham Hotels & Resorts took over sponsorship from DaimlerChrysler in 2007. Previously played during the spring, the tournament is now in a prime spot in the calendar as the last event of the regular season before the FedEx Cup playoffs.

With players battling to secure their spots in the lucrative end-of-year events, the field is typically strong, attracting some of the best players in the world.

Last year, Lucas Glover won his first PGA Tour title in two years, prevailing over An Byeong-hun and Russell Henley by two strokes before winning the FedEx St. Jude Invitational the very next week for back-to-back victories on tour.

There is plenty to play for in North Carolina this week. Could someone catch fire like Glover did 12 months ago?

Where is the Wyndham Championship played?

Sedgefield Country Club has played host to the Wyndham Championship since 2008. The par-70, 7,127-yard course is one of the shorter tracks on the PGA Tour, which naturally leads to a birdie fest.

Indeed, since the event became known as the Wyndham Championship 16 years ago, the worst score to take home the title was Patrick Reed’s -14 from 2014, suggesting there should be plenty of low scores this week.

The Donald Ross design was opened in 1925, but the Great Depression prevented a second 18-hole course on the site from being designed. In 2007, Kris Spence led a $3m redesign of the course, with the main aim of restoring as much of the original Ross concept from 1925 as possible. This saw more than 400 yards added to the length, an increase in green size, and several bunkers repositioned.

Despite these adjustments, Sedgefield is one of the easiest courses on tour. Between 2018 and 2020, only six holes played over par. Of the 12 par-4s, nine are less than 445 yards in length, another reason why the winning scores have been so low since 2008.

If the weather conditions are favorable this week, then the winning score will likely be -20 or lower.

What is the format of the Wyndham Championship?

The format of the Wyndham Championship is a standard strokeplay event played over 72 holes with a cut after 36 holes (two rounds). The player with the lowest score over four rounds will win the tournament.

Who is in the field at the Wyndham Championship?

The field for the final event of the PGA Tour season is relatively strong considering two of the three previous events have been the Olympic Games and the Open Championship. 19 golfers who featured in Paris will tee it up this week.

Furthermore, 21 of the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings will travel to Greensboro for the tournament, including Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, Robert MacIntyre, and Jordan Spieth.

Two US Ryder Cup captains are in the field too. Zach Johnson, who led the USA in Rome last year, and Keegan Bradley, who was revealed as the surprise name to take the reins for the 2025 edition.

3M Championship winner Jhonattan Vegas will be aiming to win back-to-back events on the PGA Tour, while Nick Dunlap, who won the recent Barracuda Championship, is also in the field as the pair look to secure their spots in the first playoff event next week.

How much will the winner of the Wyndham Championship receive?

Despite first picking up a club aged 11, highlights are few and far between on the golf course.

An Eagle on the par-4 16th at Kinghorn is one that stands out (it doesn’t matter that it was only 290 yards).
