Valspar Championship Preview: Field, betting odds, and tee times for the PGA Tour event
Last updated:
The PGA Tour heads to Florida’s west coast for the final stop of the Sunshine State swing as the Masters draws closer.
The reimagined 2024 PGA Tour calendar remains in Florida for one more week as a smattering of top stars make the four-hour drive from TPC Sawgrass down to Palm Harbor for the Valspar Championship.
The game’s undisputed No.1 and back-to-back PLAYERS Champion doesn’t line up in the field this week, but those that ran the strokes-gained king close do, including T2 finishers Xander Scauffele and Brian Harman.
Scheffler’s heroic defense of his title was a first for Sawgrass, but the same can’t be said at the Valspar, with Sam Burns (2021, 2022) and Paul Casey (2018, 2019) both successfully defending their triumphs on either side of Covid-abandoned 2020 edition.
All eyes will therefore be on 2023’s champion, Taylor Moore, as the American aims to make it an unprecedented hat-trick of back-to-back winners at the Innisbrook Resort.
Where is the Valspar Championship played:
The Valspar Championship is competed on the par 71, 7,340-yard Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort, Palm Harbor.
The undulating, treelined, and heavily dog-legged Copperhead Course is one of the hardest tracks encountered all season, regularly featuring in the top 10 toughest challenges on the PGA Tour with a scoring average of 71.94.
The course has an infamous reputation for its closing stretch of three holes dubbed the ‘Snakepit’, guarded by a large bronze statue of a poisonous viper. The par-4 16th typically plays the hardest, averaging 4.37 in 2023, thanks to its daunting tee shot requiring the utmost accuracy to avoid water on the right and trees left.
The Copperhead Course is also a virtual stop on Trackman’s NEXT Golf Tour.
Who is in the field for the Valspar Championship?
With no Scheffler and McIlroy this week, Xander Schaueffele heads up the field as No.5 in the OGWRs. A total of 10 players inside the top 30 line up in the field including Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Tony Finau, Brian Harman, Sam Burns, and Keegan Bradley.
Luke Donald and Zach Johnson will also tee it up as the Ryder Cup captains from Marco Simone go head-to-head again. The pair were featured in the recent Netflix Full Swing 2 docuseries, as did fan favorite Joel Dahmen, who joins them in Palm Harbour after his encouraging T11 finish at the Players.
The full field competing in Palm Harbor can be found here.
Who will win the Valspar Championship?
The Copperhead Course at Innisbrook is a second-shot golf course that can’t be overpowered from the tee. As NBC golf analyst Mark Rolfing says, “It’s all about the angles.”
On route to victory last year Taylor Moore ranked second for GIR, fifth for SG: Approach, and second for SG: Tee to Green.
How much will the winner receive at the Valspar Championship?
While it may not have Signature status, there is still an $8.4 million purse on offer in Palm Harbour with the winner set to receive $1,458,000 and 500 FedExCup points.
