R&A announce 2027 Open venue

The 2027 Open Championship will take place at St Andrews

The Claret Jug will return to the Home of Golf for the 155th Open Championship

The 2027 Open will be played at St Andrews, the R&A have confirmed.

The Old Course last hosted the battle for the Claret Jug in 2022, when Cameron Smith held off Cameron Young and Rory McIlroy to put his name on that famous trophy.

It will be the 31st time the Old Course has held The Open, with the tournament being held there regularly every five years from 1990 to 2015 before it was decided to delay a return for two years to host the 150th edition of golf’s oldest major.

And with questions asked as to whether The R&A would reset that pattern or wait until 2030, it seems we now have our answer.

St Andrews has hosted The Open a record 30 times.

Mark Darbon, who replaced Martin Slumbers as the chief executive of The R&A just last month, said: “I’m hugely excited to be making this my first announcement at The R&A.

“I’m looking forward to The Open’s return to St Andrews every bit as much as the fans and the players. There is something incredibly special about The Open being played on the Old Course and so many of the great champions have walked these fairways since the first staging here in 1873.

“St Andrews is the home of golf and it generates a unique atmosphere for the fans and the players as well as providing an amazing spectacle on television and digitally for millions of viewers around the world.

“It promises to be another milestone occasion at one of sport’s greatest and most historic venues and we will be doing everything we can to make it a memorable experience for everyone involved.”

The 2027 Open will mark 100 years since Bobby Jones – one of the finest to ever play the game – triumphed over this famous corner of Fife to successfully defend the title he had won 12 months prior at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

As well as Jones, other great names to have been crowned Champion Golfer of the Year at St Andrews include JH Taylor, James Braid, Peter Thomson, Bobby Locke, Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods.

Before the return to Scotland, this year’s Open will be held at Royal Portrush for just the third time, while next year the Claret Jug will move across the Irish Sea for an 11th playing at Royal Birkdale and the first in a decade.

The 2027 Open will take place from July 15-18 that year.
