LIV Golf Houston 2024: Bryson, Brooks, and Rahm prep for Pinehurst in ‘Space City’

LIV Golf returns after a month off for its eighth event in Houston where 10 breakaway tour players complete their preparation for Pinehurst.

The second half of the LIV season gets underway this week as the Saudi-backed tour makes its Texas debut, becoming the 11th different state to host a LIV Golf tournament.

Aussie outfit Ripper GC, captained by Cameron Smith aim for a third consecutive team win after picking up titles in Adelaide and Singapore. Bryson DeChambeau returns to action following his barnstorming efforts at the PGA Championship a few weeks ago, as does Smash GC captain Brooks Koepka who became the first player to win four LIV Golf individual titles at the previous event in Singapore.

Along with Jon Rahm, the only player to finish in the top 10 of each LIV event this season, Smith DeChambeau and Koepka join a 10-strong group exempt into the upcoming US Open at Pinehurst No.2. One colleague who won’t be joining them in North Carolina however, is Houston home favorite Patrick Reed – still in search of a first LIV Tour title.

Elsewhere this week, a high-quality limited field add the finishing touches to their preparation for the final Major on US soil at the Jack Nicklaus-hosted Memorial Tournament.

Where is LIV Golf Houston played?

The par 72, 7,403-yard Golf Club of Houston plays host, the same venue to have welcomed the PGA Tour’s Houston Open between 2003 and 2019. Five current LIV stars have won titles at the venue including Paul Casey (2009), Anthony Kim (2010), Phil Mickelson (2011), Matt Jones (2014), and Ian Poulter (2018).

The course becomes the first in Texas to host a LIV Golf tournament, featuring multi-tiered greens, strategic bunkers, and several water hazards. At just 315 yards, the par-4 12th hole will be drivable each day and should get the odd look at a rare albatross or two.

Ian Poulter was the last LIV player to win at the Golf Club of Houston venue in 2018

LIV Golf 2024 individual and team standings so far

Two-time US Open champion Brooks Koepka took the spoils a month ago in Singapore, prevailing over Australian duo Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman by two strokes to claim a fourth individual LIV title.

Joaquin Niemann still leads the way in the individual standings by quite some distance. The Chilean has earned 134.40 points, which means he leads Jon Rahm (98.17 points) and Dean Burmester (92.24) in the race to win the individual points list come the end of the season.

In the team event, Crushers GC holds a commanding lead over Legion XIII and Torque GC as they are the only team to break through the 100-point barrier, sitting atop the leaderboard with 105.50 points.

Brooks Koepka warmed up for his PGA Championship defence by winning LIV Golf Singapore.

How much does the LIV Golf Houston winner receive?

Only the top three teams will receive prize money in each event. The winners will earn their team $3 million, with $1.5 million and $500k earned by the second and third-placed teams respectively.

What is the format of LIV Golf Houston?

The 2024 season has seen the LIV field rise to 54 competitors – 52 players across 13 franchises combined with two unsigned individuals, Anthony Kim, and Hudson Swafford – as the breakaway circuit continues to grow.

The players assigned to a team compete in an individual event alongside a team event. Every stroke counts in the former, but in the team event, only the combined scores of the team’s top three count for the first two rounds, whereas all four scores count during the final round of each event.

Each event is played over 54 holes, with no cuts and shotgun starts.
