The DP World Tour arrives at its final event of the International Swing as it remains in South Africa for the co-sanctioned Jonsson Workwear Open, at Glendower Golf Club

The Jonsson Workwear Open marks the final event of the International Swing before we see the DP World Tour head off to Singapore to start the Asian Swing in two weeks. This will be the third swing of the new DP World Tour structure, which will see lots of events enjoy their largest purses to date.

Previously a stage on the Challenge Tour, the Jonsson Workwear Open, is the second of two co-sanctioned events between the DP World Tour and Sunshine Tour. Once again we can expect another week yielding excitement as a bunch of talented young South African golfers are given the chance to shine amongst some of the best players on the DPWT.

The inaugural Jonsson Workwear Open took place in 2022 at the Durban Country Club with South African J.C. Ritchie claiming victory, shooting 26-under-par. In 2023, the tournament was relocated to the Nicklaus-designed golf course, Steyn City, with Germany’s Nick Bachem lifting the trophy when he won on 24-under par. He won in only his 12th start on the DP World Tour, closing with a final round of 64.

Who is playing in the Jonsson Workwear Open?

All of the last four winners on the DPWT will be teeing it up this week. Rikuya Hoshino, Dylan Frittelli, Darius Van Driel, and last week’s SDC championship winner Jordan Gumberg are all in the field. They’re also joined by last year’s champion Nick Bachem, who will be hoping to finish three places higher than last week and successfully defend his title at Glendower.

The last event of the international swing may not be up to scratch with some of the Rolex Series events this year on the DP World Tour, but the field is certainly competitive and full of young talent who will want to impress over the weekend, just as Robin Tiger Williams did last week at the SDC Championship. If you want a more star-studded field for this week then tune into the Arnold Palmer Invitational later in the day with 18 of the world’s top 20 golfers in action.

What is the format of the Jonsson Workwear Open?

It is a standard strokeplay event played over 72 holes with a cut after 36 holes (two rounds) that sees the leading 70 players and ties make the final two rounds. The player who achieves the lowest score over four rounds will win the tournament.

Where is the Jonsson Workwear Open being played?

The third edition of the Jonsson Workwear Open will be played at – Glendower Golf Club. A new venue for the tournament but not for the world of golf, as the Glendower Golf Club has played host to eight South African Opens and had some of the world’s best golfers through the door. At a mere 7542 yards, this Nicklaus design is set to challenge any golfer’s ability.

Glendower is a favorite amongst the professionals, European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley played in the SA Open here and said “It’s one of the best I’ve ever played, very visual, really well bunkered, and extremely well set up. We don’t get to play on many traditional courses anymore. I could see this as a real potential venue for a US Open if it was in America.”

Who will win the Jonsson Workwear Open?

Despite the field lacking the star-studded names of many events on the DPWT calendar, the Jonsson Workwear Open is still likely to be contended to the very last hole on Sunday, just like last week’s SDC Championship which ended in a playoff between Jordan Gumberg and Robin Williams.

Last year’s champion Nick Bachem will be hoping to shoot a similar 24 under par once again this week. He finished T4 last week at the SDC Championship and will be hoping to carry on that form to put on a strong title defense this week.

Tom McKibbin is yet to win in 2024 but he has finished well inside the top 20 in his last four events so maybe he could climb a few more spaces and get his hands on that trophy come Sunday, as this year promises to be a good one for the Northern Irishman.

How much does the winner of the Jonsson Workwear Open receive?

The winner of the Jonsson Workwear Open Championship will earn $255,000 from a total purse of $1,500,000. The runner-up will receive $165,000 as his share, with the rest of the field fighting it out for the remainder of the prize pot.
