FM Championship Preview: Field, betting odds, tee times and how to watch

The FM Championship is a brand new event for the LPGA tour, let’s take a look at everything you need to know about the tournament.

The final women’s major championship is in the bag as St Andrews played host to the AIG Women’s Open. There is now an eight-month gap until the Chevron Championship – the first women’s major of 2025 – but with the Solheim Cup taking place next month, there is still a lot to look forward to in the women’s game, including the FM Championship this week.

Before thoughts turn to the biennial event, the inaugural FM Championship will be played at TPC Boston in Norton, which marks the start of a five-year partnership between the LPGA and FM.

This is the first major sports sponsorship for FM as Fenway Sports Management helped secure the tournament due to the commercial agreement with the LPGA Tour which was formed in early 2024.

The $3.8m purse will be one of the highest on tour outside the five majors and the Tour Championship, which could see the tournament becoming one of the most popular on the schedule, despite its unfortunate slot in the week after the Women’s Open at St Andrews Old Course.

Where is the FM Championship played?

The Gil Hanse and Arnold Palmer design of TPC Boston has featured heavily on the PGA Tour over the previous 20 years. The course hosted the Deutsche Bank Championship between 2003 and 2016, the Dell Technologies Championship in 2017 and 2018 and the Northern Trust in 2020.

13 of these events were part of the FedEx Cup playoff series and the list of winners on the course is staggering. Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh – a combined total of 28 major titles – have all claimed victory at TPC Boston in the past.

TPC Boston is host to the inaugural FM Global Championship

The par-772, 6,598-yard course features several daunting holes which will test the 114-strong field this week. The par-5 second hole isn’t the longest (542 yards), yet it will require three excellent shots to generate a birdie chance.

A 231-yard par-3 is daunting enough without an elevated green, but this is what the players will face at hole 11. A bunker is strategically placed several feet in front of the green, in which an approach to the heart of it will create a solid chance for par.

The finishing hole is a 530-yard par-5 which features a heavily guarded green. Bunkers in front and to the right of the putting surface mean an accurate approach shot is required for a birdie chance. Although if the player overcooks their approach, the ball will run below the hole at the back of the green.

What is the format of the FM Championship?

The format of the FM Championship is a standard strokeplay event played over 72 holes with a cut after 36 holes (two rounds). The player with the lowest score over four rounds will win the tournament.

Who is in the field at the FM Championship?

Despite the AIG Women’s Open finishing just days before, there is still a strong field for the FM Championship.

2024 major champions Amy Yang and Yuka Saso will take part in the event, with a spot reserved for the winner at St Andrews.

Former major winners Allisen Corpuz, Celine Boutier, Ashleigh Buhai and Hannah Green will also be hoping to win the inaugural edition of the FM Championship this year.

Ross Kilvington – Contributing Golf News Writer

Ross Kilvington is a freelance writer from Scotland who currently writes previews for Today’s Golfer, covering events on the DP World, PGA, and LPGA tours along with the LIV Golf Series.

Ross holds a passionate interest in golf and tries to play as often as possible, although having two daughters under the age of 6 means his quest to break 80 will have to wait a little longer.

Despite first picking up a club aged 11, highlights are few and far between on the golf course.

An Eagle on the par-4 16th at Kinghorn is one that stands out (it doesn’t matter that it was only 290 yards).
