Team Cup 2025: All you need to know ahead of Europe’s first Ryder Cup warm-up
Last updated:
Great Britain & Ireland take on Continental Europe for the Team Cup in Abu Dhabi as Ryder Cup preparations begin to take shape in the Middle East.
Two teams of 10 players will compete for the 2025 Team Cup as Luke Donald gets an early dress rehearsal nine months ahead of September’s showdown against the United States. The Ryder Cup-style event provides players and future captains with an invaluable opportunity to gain experience and learnings that will serve them well ahead of golf’s greatest team competition.
The biannual event last took place in 2023 with Continental Europe edging out Great Britain and Ireland 14.5-10.5. The winning captain on that occasion was Francesco Molinari, who leads out the European Team once again, this time against Justin Rose who takes the GB&I reins.
“This event provided valuable insight for a number of players who eventually made it to Marco Simone, with six of the 20 competitors in 2023 going on to play in the Ryder Cup, three of those making their debut appearances, and we’re excited to see who can make their mark as they try and earn a place in my side for New York City,” said Donald.
He added: “There’s a great mix of youth and experience on both sides and there will certainly be a competitive atmosphere at Abu Dhabi Golf Resort.”
What is the format of the Team Cup?
The Team Cup largely mirrors the three-day Ryder Cup format. Unlike its big brother, however, all Team Cup players will compete in every session with both captains also competing.
