Genesis Championship 2024 preview: Field, betting odds, tee times, and how to watch

The final event of the DP World Tour ‘Back 9 Swing’ takes place this week at the Genesis Championship in South Korea.

Six months ago, Genesis signed an agreement with the DPWT that will see the Korea Championship become the Genesis Championship from this year on, merging with the KPGA’s existing tournament of the same name.

The strategic alliance between both tours will see an exciting field compete in the final event in the Race to Dubai regular season schedule, ahead of the two playoff events in November.

“Genesis continues to be an incredible partner to the game of golf worldwide and with this new agreement, the Genesis Championship will be elevated in every way for 2024,” said Guy Kinnings, Chief Executive Officer of the DPWT in April.

“Our new look Back 9 phase will add extra excitement, with the tournament playing host to a plethora of dramatic storylines as players bid to keep their Tour cards and qualify for the Play-Offs.”

The tournament now holds a prime spot on the schedule, which will only add to the drama as players aim to keep their tour cards or secure enough points to extend their season into the 11th month of the year.

Last year, Pablo Larrazabal claimed his eighth victory on tour by winning the first and only Korea Championship, prevailing by two strokes over Marcus Helligkilde, making four birdies over the final eight holes to win the title.

With the change in name plus an enhanced position in the calendar, the tournament has attracted several big names in what promises to be a wonderful conclusion to the regular DPWT season.

Pablo Larrazabal claimed a two-shot victory in 2023.

Where is the Genesis Championship played?

Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon will host the Genesis Championship, located just 40 miles from Seoul, the South Korean capital city.

The par-72, 7,470-yard course was officially opened in 2010, hosting the Songdo Championship on the Champions Tour – the first event on the seniors tour to be held in Asia – while also being the venue for the 2012 Korea Women’s Open on the KLPGA Tour.

In 2015, the course hosted the Presidents Cup, the first time it had been held in Asia, as the USA claimed a 15.5-14.5 victory over the International side.

Only two of the par-4 holes on the course measure under 400 yards, while the finishing hole has the potential to cause some drama if there are a few players challenging for the title on Sunday.

The 545-yard par-5 18th has a large pond running the full length of the fairway, indicating an accurate drive down the left offers the greatest chance of going for the green in two. A wayward drive could cause plenty of problems, no doubt about that.

Who is in the field for the Genesis Championship?

Tom Kim is in the field, returning to the country of his birth to take part in the Genesis Championship. Fellow South Koreans joining him at the event include Byeong Hun An, Sanghyun Park, and Sung Kang among others, who will all be aiming to claim victory in their homeland.

Nicolai Hojgaard will also be teeing it up in Incheon alongside Larrazabal, who tasted success at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club last year.

Elsewhere, winners on the DPWT over the last two seasons such as Antoine Rozner, Yannick Paul, and Marcel Siem are currently in the field for the tournament.

What is the format of the Genesis Championship?

The format of the Genesis Championship is a standard strokeplay event played over 72 holes with a cut after 36 holes (two rounds). The player with the lowest score over four rounds will win the tournament.

How much will the winner of the Genesis Championship receive?

A prize fund of $4m is on offer this week, the fourth highest of the entire ‘back 9’ series. The winner will receive a cheque for $720k. More important than the money, however, is the victor will also receive 5,000 Race to Dubai Points and 1,500 Ryder Cup points.

Despite first picking up a club aged 11, highlights are few and far between on the golf course.

An Eagle on the par-4 16th at Kinghorn is one that stands out (it doesn’t matter that it was only 290 yards).
