Butterfield Bermuda Championship 2024 Preview: The final stop outside of the USA on the PGA Tour
Last updated:
The FedEx Cup Fall Series is drawing to a close and the penultimate event is the Butterfield Bermuda Championship
The Butterfield Bermuda Championship is the penultimate event in the FedEx Cup Fall Series which started in September, offering golfers a chance to improve their playing privileges heading into the 2025 PGA Tour season.
Debuting in 2019, the Butterfield Bermuda Championship was originally a designated event alongside the WGC-HSBC Champions. Due to the cancelation of the WGC-HSBC Champions in 2020, 2021, and 2022, the Bermuda Championship was granted full FedEx Cup point event status.
This meant more lucrative rewards, including an increase in prize money and the tournament winner receives an invitation to the Masters.
In 2021, Butterfield partnered with the PGA Tour to sponsor the event, with the partnership now stretching into the 2024 edition.
Although the majority of the golfing world will have their eyes on the DP World Tour Championship this weekend, the Bermuda Championship is critical for those players who are hovering around the top 125 bubble, with those finishing inside that number securing PGA Tour cards for 2025.
The likes of Dylan Wu, Wesley Bryan, and Alejandro Tosti find themselves ranked 126, 128, and 131 in the standings. All three of those golfers will be hoping for big performances at the Bermuda Championship.
Last year, Camilo Villegas claimed an emotional victory by two shots over Alex Noren. The win came just over three years since his 22-month-old daughter passed away from cancer, with the victory his first on tour since 2014.
Where is the Butterfield Bermuda Championship held?
Port Royal Golf Course hosts the event once again this year and is one of the most scenic island courses in the world.
Designed by Robert Trent Jones in 1970, Port Royal is a government-run municipal course known to be one of Jack Nicklaus’ all-time favorites. If it is good enough for the Golden Bear, it is good enough for everyone.
The 6,842-yard course may be one of the shortest on the PGA Tour, but this shouldn’t deter from the challenges it presents. The undulating terrain, narrow fairways, and the constant threat of windy conditions are clear indications that Port Royal can be extremely demanding.
A score of 24-under has won twice in the previous five years, demonstrating that the island course can be tamed. In order to do so, players will need to be dialed in with their approach shots. That’s a certainty.
Who is in the field for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship?
Villegas, Seamus Power, and Brendan Todd, three former winners of the event, are in the field this week, alongside a host of players who have won on the PGA Tour.
Berger, Kevin Kisner, and Brandt Snedeker have a combined 17 tour wins between them, while Major Champions Lucas Glover and Francesco Molinari will also tee it up in Bermuda.
Also teeing it up in Bermuda are the Bryan Bros – PGA Tour Winner, Wesley Bryan, and his older brother George Bryan. Both of them played in this event last season, but only George made the cut.
Scotland’s Graeme Robertson is making his PGA Tour debut this week after winning the Gosling’s Invitational in Bermuda. Robertson won the 2024 Tartan Pro Tour Order of Merit. Could he add a PGA Tour title to his accolades?
