The new 2020 golf schedule
The 2020 golf schedule has been obliterated by the Coronavirus pandemic, leaving golf fans to wonder if and when the majors, Ryder Cup, PGA Tour and European Tour will be played in 2020.
Here’s how the heavily-amended 2020 golf season looks as things stand:
US Open
The US Open, previously scheduled for 18-21 June at Winged Foot in New York, has been rescheduled for 14-20 September, remaining at Winged Foot.
The Open
The Open was due to be played at Royal St George’s from 16-19 July, but has been cancelled. Royal St George’s will host The Open in 2021 instead, with the 150th Open to be played at St Andrews in 2022, a year later than planned.
PGA Championship
The 2020 PGA Championship was due to take place 14-17 May but has been postponed and will now be played at TPC Harding Park, the original venue, 6-9 August.
2020 Ryder Cup
The 2020 Ryder Cup has not been postponed or cancelled, meaning it is currently scheduled for its original slot, 25-27 September, at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.
2020 Masters
Augusta National has identified 12-15 November as the intended dates to host the 2020 Masters Tournament, which was previously scheduled for 9-12 April before a postponement was accounced in March.
PGA Tour
The 2020 PGA Tour schedule has, of course, been thoroughly disrupted by the Coronavirus. It is not known how many regular season PGA Tour events will be played in 2020, but the PGA Tour has identified dates for its regular season finale – the Wyndham Championship – and the three Fed Ex Cup Playoff events.
The Wyndham Championship is currently scheduled to start the week commencing 10 August, with the Fed Ex Cup being played the three weeks immediately after. The 2020 Tour Championship would begin on 4 September and conclude on Monday 7 September, which is Labor Day in the US.
The PGA Tour will seek to reschedule tournaments into the weeks formerly occupied by the US Open, The Open Championship and the Men’s Olympic golf competition in June and July. The PGA Tour will make further announcements about this potential, as well as its fall schedule, in the coming weeks.
European Tour
Due to the many complexities involved, the European Tour is currently working through various scenarios in relation to the rescheduling of its tournaments for the 2020 European Tour season. The European Tour will make further announcements on these in due course.
LPGA Tour
The LPGA released a revised look at the LPGA Tour’s 2020 summer schedule, beginning on the week of15 June with the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G. In addition, the LPGA Tour announced that they have successfully rescheduled their first two majors of the year (the ANA Inspiration moves to the week of 7 September at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California; and the U.S. Women’s Open conducted by the USGA moves to the week of 7 December at Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas).
