Work out who to back – and when to watch them – at the Turkish Airlines Open

The European Tour is at The Montgomerie Maxx Royal in Turkey this week for the Turkish Airlines Open. It’s an event that could be renamed “The Justin Rose Open”. The Englishman won it in 2017 and 2018 and returns this year hoping to make it three in a row. 

His chances will be further improved by the fact that the likes of Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Ian Poulter and Paul Casey have all decided to give the event a miss. There will still be stiff competition, however, including Race to Dubai leader Bernd Wiesberger, last year’s Race to Dubai winner Francesco Molinari, Shane Lowry (who sits third in the Race to Dubai), Matt Wallace, Patrick Reed and Danny Willett.

Turkish Airlines Open betting tips

Justin Rose, 8/1

Justin Rose is vying to win the Turkish Airlines Open for the third year in a row so it’s little surprise that he is the bookies’ favourite. It’s worth noting that his previous wins came at different courses, however, so it’s not a case of him being unbeatable at The Montgomerie Maxx Royal. Something about Turkey clearly suits him, though. In four visits, he’s never finished outside the top three.

Generally, he’s in solid but unspectacular form. His last top-10 came at the BMW PGA Championship in September. Since then, he’s gone T-34, T-15, and T-28 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Italian Open, and WGC-HSBC Champions. 

If he can make it three in a row, he’ll follow in the footsteps of Sergio Garcia, who achieved the feat at last year’s Valderrama Masters. Steve Stricker was the last man to do it on the PGA Tour, winning the John Deere Classic in 2009, 2010 and 2011. 

Patrick Reed, 10/1

Reed has never played in Turkey before but is on a nice run of form that suggests his debut could be a successful one. He has finished in the top-17 in his last four starts, including T-8 at the WGC-HSBC Champions and T-4 at the BMW PGA Championship. He’s steadily climbing back up the world rankings as he looks to break into the top-10 for the first time since early 2017. 

Danny Willett, 33/1

BMW PGA Championship victory was the pinnacle of what has been a season of resurgence for Willett. He’s now back inside the world top-30 and has done well here in the past, finishing T-11 the last time the Turkish Airlines Open was held on The Montgomerie Maxx Royal in 2015 and T-4 at the same venue the year before that. 

Thomas Pieters, 40/1

The big-hitting Belgian has seen a dramatic upturn in form recently, after a lengthy slump that saw him fall out of the world top-100. He won the D+D Real Czech Masters in August and has added a further three top-20 finishes since then. He’s also finished in the top-20 at this event the last two years running.  

Kiradech Aphibarnrat, 45/1

In four Turkish Airlines Open appearances he has never finished outside the top-25, including T-6 in 2017 and solo third in 2015. It hasn’t been a great season, with 10 missed cuts from 25 starts, but he has registered three top-10s, including T-8 in his last start, at The CJ Cup.
