Nedbank Golf Challenge: TV Times and who to back

The Race to Dubai heads to Sun City this week for the penultimate Rolex Series event of the year: The Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player.

Bernd Wiesberger, a three-time winner on Tour this season, currently leads nearest challenger Jon Rahm by 387 points in the Race to Dubai standings, but with an increased amount of RTD points on offer at Africa’s major this week, it’s still very much all to play for.

Last year, Lee Westwood won out in a final day battle between Sergio Garcia and Louis Oosthuizen at the Gary Player Country Club to claim the third Nedbank Challenge title of his career.

All three players return this week, along with Ryder Cup stars Henrik Stenson and Tommy Fleetwood and last week’s runner-ups Erik van Rooyen, Kurt Kitayama and Benjamin Hebert.

Nedbank Challenge: Betting Tips

Louis Oosthuizen: 9/1
Given his record here (five top 10s and a worst of T14 in eight starts), it’s understandable why Oosthuizen is the favourite to win his first Nedbank title. T3 in his last start on Tour at the WGC HSBC Champions. Ranks 4th Scoring average and 5th GIR on the European Tour this year.

Henrik Stenson: 12/1
Another player with a brilliant record at the Nedbank, including a win, three runner-up finishes and three other top 10s in seven starts. T20 at the WGC HSBC Champions, which followed a T3 at the Scandinavian Invitation, T17 at the BMW PGA Championship and a MC at the Houston Open. Ranks 5th driving accuracy, 20th stroke average and 23rd for GIR on European Tour.

Tommy Fleetwood: 12/1
Following two top 10s in three starts in Europe, Fleetwood went T20-T22-T53 in the Asian swing on the PGA Tour. Searching for his first win since Abu Dhabi in 2018. Finished T10 here last year. Ranks 4th GIR and 7th stroke average.

Matthew Fitzpatrick: 14/1
Currently lying fourth in the Race to Dubai standings, Fitzpatrick has four runner-up finishes in 2019 – which includes his most recent European Tour outing at the Italian Open. Finished T7 in the WGC HSBC Champions a couple of weeks ago, and was T28 here last year – with a best of T8 in 2017. Ranks 3rd Stroke average, 4th Putts per GIR, 14th GIR and 21st for driving accuracy on the European Tour.

Erik van Rooyen: 20/1
Van Rooyen recorded his third runner-up finish of the year at last week’s Turkish Airlines Open, losing out to Tyrrell Hatton in a play off. The South African native returns for his second trip to the Nedbank after a T60 on his debut last year. Ranks 17th average putts per round, and 23rd Stroke average.

Alex Noren: 22/1
Hasn’t finished outside of the top 30 in his last six starts on Tour. Won here in 2016, and finished T12 in his last start at the Nedbank in 2017. Ranks 11th GIR on the European Tour.

Matt Wallace: 22/1
The World No.28 had back to back top 10s at the Italian Open and Portugal Masters before going T60 in Shanghai and T50 last week, and was T5 here in 2018. Ranks 8th Stroke average, 11th Putts per GIR.

Lee Westwood: 28/1
The defending champion won for the third time last year with girlfriend Helen Storey on the bag for just the second time, and returns to Sun City following a T10 in Turkey last week. Ranks 16th Stroke average, 24th GIR.

Kurt Kitayama: 28/1
Kitayama was another of the players who made it in to the six-man playoff in Turkey but fell at the second hurdle and settled for a share of 2nd place. Still, here’s one of the most in form players in Sun City, having also finished inside the top five at both the Italian Open and Amundi Open de France before a T28 at the WGC HSBC Champions. Making his debut here this week.

Paul Waring: 28/1
Hasn’t finished worse than T30 in his last six starts on Tour, which includes a T3 at the Alfred Dunhill Links, T8 at the WGC HSBC Champions, and T16 last week. T35 and T19 in two starts here. Ranks 13th stroke average, 17th GIR.

Shubhankar Sharma: 50/1
With two T7’s in his last four starts (at the Italian Open and Turkish Airlines Open), it’s worth keeping an eye on Sharma, who finished T27 on his debut here last year.
