The Memorial Tournament Preview: Betting Tips And How To Watch

With just two weeks to go until the U.S Open, the PGA Tour heads to Muirfield Village -another of its iconic stops – for the 44th edition of The Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide.

Five-time champion Tiger Woods joins Rory McIlroy at Jack Nicklaus’ signiature event as they both make their first starts since the PGA Championship, while Justin Thomas returns after being sidelined with a wrist injury for the first time since a T12 at the Masters.

Last year, Bryson DeChambeau holed from 10 feet on the second play-off hole to defeat Byeong Hun An and capture his second PGA Tour title, and returns this week after missing his last three cuts in a row. 

Elsewhere, Patrick Cantlay, Matt Kuchar, Rory Sabbatini and Jordan Spieth all head to Ohio with back-to-back top 10s, while former champions Justin Rose and Hideki Matsuyama are also in the field.

The Memorial Tournament: Betting Tips

•  Rory McIlroy: 8/1
A victory, eight other top 10s and a worst of T21 at the Masters this year. This course sets up well for McIlroy, who was T8 here last year and T4 in 2016. Ranks 1st SG: Tee to green, 1st SG: Off the tee, 3rd scoring average, 8th SG: Approach the green and 18th birdie average.

•  Tiger Woods: 11/1
Woods looked a little out of sorts as he battled with illness on his way to a MC at the PGA Championship a few weeks ago, but returns to a place where he’s had plenty of success: Five victories in fact, between 1999 and 2012 at Muirfield Village. Win at Masters and T5 before that at WGC Matchplay. T23 last year.

•  Patrick Cantlay: 14/1
Followed up a T9 at The Masters with back-to-back T3s at the RBC Heritage and with a 4th place finish here last year, Cantlay is a great bet this week. The World No.15 is ranked 2nd for scoring average, 5th for SG: Tee to green, and inside the top 20 on Tour for SG: Off the tee, SG: Approach and birdie average.

•  Justin Rose: 16/1
Rose has been a little streaky in 2019, putting together a victory and three top 10s but also posting a MC, T29 and a T58 in three of his last four starts. However, he has an exceptional record here: A T6 last year was one of seven top 10s, and he claimed the title in 2010. Ranks 10th scoring average, 12th SG: Putting, 21st SG: Approach and 27th birdie average.

•  Justin Thomas: 18/1
Making his first start since a T12 at the Masters after being side-lined with a wrist injury. In 2019 Thomas has four top 10s and no worse a result than T35, and has been a consistent contender here with results of T8-T4 at Muirfield Village the past two years. Ranks 1st for birdie average and inside the top 5 on Tour for GIR, scoring average, SG: Tee to green, SG: Approach the green and SG: Around the green.

•  Rickie Fowler: 18/1
A T36 at the PGA and MC last week followed back-to-back top 10s, but with consecutive top 10s here in the last two years and two runner-up finishes all-time, this is a good place for Fowler to bounce back. Ranks 7th scoring average, 14th SG: Putting and 23rd birdie average.

•  Tony Finau: 18/1
After a runner-up finish last week gave him his 21st top 10 without a victory, the question remains over Finau’s ability to close out a tournament. But if you’re looking for someone likely to be in the mix, Finau has a best of T8 here and has two top 10s in his last four starts. Ranks 17th for scoring average, 26th SG: Off the tee and inside the top 40 on Tour for birdie average, SG: Approach and SG: Tee to green.

•  Jordan Spieth: 20/1
Spieth has been phenomenal on the greens the past two weeks to end up T3 at the PGA Championship and T8 last week, but still struggled off the tee. Best of T3 here in 2015 and T13 in 2017, although MC here in 2018. Ranks 4th SG: Putting, 11th for birdie average and 38th for scoring average this season.

•  Hideki Matsuyama: 20/1
Hasn’t finished worse than T33 in his last 11 starts, and last teed up at the PGA Championship. Was the champion here in 2014, T5 the year later and T13 last year. Ranks 4th SG: Tee to green, 8th SG: Approach the green, 13th Approach the green and 18th for scoring average.

•  Matt Kuchar: 20/1
Four top 10s and a T12 in his last four starts, including two runner-up finishes at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play and the RBC Heritage. T13-T4-T4 in his last three starts at Memorial, where he won in 2013. Ranks 1st for GIR, 6th for both scoring average and SG: Approach, 8th for driving accuracy, 9th for birdie average and 12th for SG: Tee to green.

•  Adam Scott: 28/1
T8 in his last start at the PGA Championship, which was his third top 10 in his last seven starts. Best of T4 at Memorial in 2014, with a T35 last year. Ranks 15th for scoring average and 17th for both SG: Around the green and SG: Putting

•  Gary Woodland: 28/1
T8 in his last start at the PGA Championship for his third top 10 of the year, which followed a WD at the Wells Fargo Championship. T23 last year, with a best of T4 in 2016 and 6th in 2011. Ranks 2nd for birdie average ,6th for SG: Off the tee, 7th for SG: Tee to green, 10th for GIR and 16th for scoring average.

•  Rory Sabbatini: 66/1
On an exceptional run of form, having gone T10-T18-T5-T6 in his last four starts – the latest being his T6 at the Charles Schwab Challenge. Was T2 here in 2012. Ranks 22nd for SG: Around the green, 33rd for Scoring average and 35th for Birdie average.

•  Tyrrell Hatton: 66/1
T8 last week after consecutive 69s, and will come in to this week with confidence for his Memorial debut. Other top 10 this year came at WGC Dell Technologies Match Play. Ranks 11th SG: Around the green.
