Justin Thomas withdraws from PGA Championship with wrist injury

World No.5 Justin Thomas has withdrawn from the 2019 PGA Championship with a wrist injury.

Thomas, who won his first major at the 2017 PGA Championship, finished T12 at the Masters but won’t be part of the field teeing  up at Bethpage Black.

The nine-time PGA Tour winner took to social media on Monday to announce that a wrist injury has forced him to withdraw.

“Unfortunately, I will be withdrawing from the 101st PGA Championship at Bethpage Black this week as my wrist is not yet fully healed,” Thomas wrote.

“Obviously, as a past champion, this tournament is extra special to me. It consistently has the best field in golf and I’m disappointed to not be among those competing this year but I’m optimistic about a return in the near future.”

He originally began struggling with his right wrist just before the Ryder Cup last September, and more recently experienced a ‘dead arm’ sensation on the same side after an awkward shot at the Honda Classic.

But a Twitter post from Action Network’s Jason Sobel confirmed that a text from Thomas stated the injury isn’t serious and is just a ‘bone bruise’.

With his withdrawal, Thomas is now the only player out of the World’s top 100 who won’t be playing at the Long Island course.

Kelly Kraft will take his place.
