What’s In The Bag: Rory McIlroy (February 2025 update)
Last updated:
What golf clubs and balls does Rory McIlroy use? Our in-depth review of what’s in the four-time major champion’s bag in 2025.
Rory McIlroy is a TaylorMade staff golfer and uses almost a full bag of TaylorMade clubs.
One of the most influential people in golf, the Northern Irishman hasn’t always played TaylorMade clubs and golf balls. He lifted his first two Majors (2011 US Open and 2012 US PGA) using Titleist clubs and the Pro V1 golf ball before joining Nike in 2013. He signed a ten-year deal rumored to be worth $150m with the American sports giant to use the brand’s clubs, ball, bag, clothing, and shoes.

In 2017, following Nike’s decision to leave the golf equipment market, McIlroy signed a ten-year clubs, ball, and bag deal with TaylorMade, worth $100m. He also renegotiated his Nike apparel and shoes agreement, signing a fresh ten-year contract worth a reported $200m.

He turned pro in 2007, shortly after he’d topped the world amateur ranking, and won his first European Tour title in 2009 at the Dubai Desert Classic. His first PGA Tour win followed in 2010 at the Quail Hollow Championship.
He’s gone on to win a further 26 PGA Tour victories, including the Players Championship, Tour Championship, and Arnold Palmer Invitational, and 18 European (DP World) Tour titles, including flagship events such as the BMW PGA Championship and Genesis Scottish Open. McIlroy’s most recent victory was the 2024 DP World Tour Championship, which also saw him crowned Race to Dubai champion and match Seve Ballesteros’ record of six Order of Merit titles.

What driver does Rory McIlroy use?
Rory McIlroy uses a TaylorMade Qi10 driver (9° at 8.25°) with a Fujikura Ventus Black 6 X shaft

Before the start of the 2024 season, McIlroy began testing a driver head he normally wouldn’t consider: the larger head profile and more forgiving Qi10 driver.
Rory noticed during at-home testing that he found the center of the face more often with the help of more MOI in Qi10 vs Qi10 LS. That then sparked a thought in Rory’s head of whether he could return back to a longer driver shaft to get more distance while also having the forgiveness of the Qi10 head.
In years past, Rory shortened his driver shaft to 44 inches as it tightened his dispersion off the tee compared to a longer length shaft. Now with the Qi10, Rory had a chance for the first time in a few years to be able to go back to a longer shaft at 45 inches without sacrificing any change in dispersion.
“I played 45 (inch driver shaft) for most of my career, so I just felt like there’s no reason why I shouldn’t be able to hit a driver that’s 45 inches and control it and do what I want to do with it," says McIlroy. "The one thing that has made me comfortable going back to a slightly longer shaft is the profile of this Qi10 head. I just think that the slightly larger profile of the Qi10 with the longer shaft in it looks good to me and I can find the middle of it easier.”
McIlroy got his first win of 2024 – and his first with the TaylorMade Qi10 driver – at the Dubai Desert Classic. Rory switched out the Qi10 LS for a standard Qi10 earlier this season and has won the Zurich Classic alongside Shane Lowry with the Qi10, plus the Wells Fargo Championship.

What fairway wood does Rory McIlroy use?
Rory McIlroy uses a TaylorMade Qi10 3-wood (15°) with a Fujikura Ventus Black 8 X shaft and a TaylorMade Qi10 5-wood (18°) with a Fujikura Ventus Black 9 shaft

And while it's McIlroy's driving prowess that typically grabs the headlines, his performance off the turf with fairway wood in hand is second to none.
Rory’s 3-wood is pushed to maximize distance and accentuates the strength of his game – hitting the ball a lot farther than almost everyone else. That creates a substantial gap in yardage when you jump from his 3-wood to his longest iron. Insert the 5-wood. It’s a club that needs to cover 250 yards or 290 – and every number in between.
TaylorMade's Senior Tour Rep, Adrian Rietveld referred to Rory as "the best 5-wood player I've ever seen. It’s really a unique club for Rory because of that versatility,” he says. "It’s like watching an artist at work, seeing all the different shots he can hit with it.”

What irons does Rory McIlroy use?
Rory McIlroy uses a TaylorMade P760 4-iron and TaylorMade Rors Proto Irons (5-9), all with Project X Rifle 7.0 shafts

The lofts of his irons are close to standard with 4° increments between irons, while lie angles change at a .5° increment. They weigh in at D4.5 with Project X Rifle 7.0 shafts and 6.5 in his wedges (tour pros generally use softer shafts in their wedges for added feel).

What golf ball does Rory McIlroy use?
- Rory changed to the TP5 for his first PGA Tour event of 2025 at Pebble Beach. Will it be permanent?
Rory McIlroy uses a TaylorMade TP5 Golf Ball
“I just started to hit some chips with the TP5 instead of the TP5x and I really loved how I felt,” McIlroy told Golfweek.
“I hadn’t really tested the 2024 TP5, and I loved how it was reacting around the greens. And then I started hitting some 60, 70-yard shots with it, and it was coming off [with] much lower launch, but spinnier.”
“I just did some testing with [the 2024 TP5] and compared it to the TP5x,” he explained. “I used a 2019 TP5, and the difference between a 2019 TP5 and a 2019 TP5x was a lot in terms of the spin rates and the launch angles.
“[The 2024 TP5] seems to launch probably a degree lower for me, but the spin rate’s very, very similar, which I really like.”
