PGA Tour announce expansion to 49 events in 2019/2020 schedule
Last updated:
The PGA TOUR have announced that they are expanding their schedule to 49 events for 2019-20 season
The 2019/2020 schedule is not only bigger by three events, but features a dramatically reshuffled calendar of events at the start of the year in order to cater to next year’s Olympics in Tokyo before the Ryder Cup next September.
The new season starts just a couple of weeks after the end of this season’s FedEx Cup play-offs with A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier from September 12-15, with 11 events to be played between then and the end of November before the non FedEx Cup sanctioned Hero World Challenge, Presidents Cup and QBE Shootout occupy December’s part in the schedule.
There are two brand new events, played in back-to-back weeks in the wrap-around season: The ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP in Japan, and the Bermuda Championship, which will be played opposite the WGC HSBC Champions from October 24-27.
The regular season will once again end with the Wyndham Championship, which will then be followed by the three FedEx Cup events that culminate in the Tour Championship at East Lake from August 24-30.
A couple of noticeable differences: There will be no WGC played the week after the Open next year, with the 3M Open taking place in the week before the Olympics instead. In addition, the CIMB Classic is the only tournament not returning to this year’s schedule.

2019: The wrap around season
This year’s season ends in just a few weeks time, but there’s barely a break before the 2019/20 season gets underway with 11 events between September and the end of the year.
A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier returns after a one year absense to start the schedule from the 12-15 September, and is followed by The Sanderson Farms Championship, the Safeway Open, Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and Houston Open – which also makes its return after a year out.
The Tour then heads to Asia for the CJ CUP @ Nine Bridges in Korea, followed by the newly sanctioned ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP and WGC HSBC Champions in Shanghai – with the new Bermuda Championship also being played at the same time.
Following a week off, the TOUR continues the 2019 segment at the Mayakoba Golf Classic (November 11-17) before concluding with The RSM Classic. While that marks the end of FedExCup competition until the first week of January 2020, the Hero World Challenge will take place from December 4-7, the 13th Presidents Cup returns to The Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia the following week, and the QBE Shootout ends the year in Florida from December 13-15 – a week later than it was played last year.
2020
Once the TOUR resumes in January for the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, the scheduling sequence remains unchanged from the current season until the Rocket Mortgage Classic‘s move from the last week of June to May 25-31. This unchanged schedule includes the Players Championship, which will be played from March 12-15, the Masters Tournament from 9-12 and the PGA Championship May 14-17 at TPC Harding Park.
The next four weeks remain the same (including the U.S. Open from Jun 18-21 at Winged Foot) before the move of the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational and Barracuda Championship to June-29-July 5 and the 3M Open to July 20-26, the week after The Open and week before the Olympic competition.
Following the Olympic Games, the Regular Season wraps up at the Wyndham Championship (August 3-9), where not only the FedExCup Playoffs field will be finalized, but the added drama of the season-long Wyndham Rewards Top 10 will be determined. Introduced this season, the $10 million competition caps the Regular Season by rewarding the 10 leaders in FedExCup points, with $2 million going to the winner.
Due to the off week for the Olympics, the FedExCup Playoffs will begin one week later and conclude the final week of August: THE NORTHERN TRUST August 10-16; BMW Championship August 17-23; and the TOUR Championship August 24-30.
The FedExCup Playoffs wrap up the Season of Championships, which begins with THE PLAYERS Championship (March 9-15) and continues through the Masters Tournament (April 6-12); PGA Championship (May 11-17); U.S. Open (June 15-21); and The Open Championship (July 13-19).
Several new or familiar venues are included during this stretch, beginning with the PGA Championship visiting TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, the U.S. Open returning to Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, and The Open Championship going to Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, England.
Additionally, THE NORTHERN TRUST will be held for the first time in the Boston market at TPC Boston in Norton, Massachusetts, while the BMW Championship will visit Olympia Fields Country Club in suburban Chicago.
