John Daly WD’s from the Open due to ‘medical condition’

John Daly has withdrawn from the Open after he was bitten by a spider that left him needing surgery – not long after the R&A denied his request to use a golf cart around Royal Portrush next week

It’s been a difficult week for John Daly. First, his request to use a golf cart at the Open Championship at Royal Portrush was denied, and then he was rushed to have emergency surgery after being bitten by a brown recluse spider in England.

Despite his disappointment about the decision made by the R&A, Daly had made it clear it his intention had been to play through the pain in his knee, even if he was left disagreeing with the governing body after being allowed to use a golf buggy at the PGA Championship and on the PGA Champions Tour this season.

“While I trust the R&A’s decision was made with good intentions, I could not disagree more with their conclusions,” Daly wrote on social media.

“Shortly I will need either uni-compartment or total knee replacement. Before that time comes my plan is to give it a shot in 2 weeks at Portrush. Fingers crossed I can make it thru the pain. See you in Ireland.”

However, after later needing surgery and being treated for early sepsis after a spider bite, Daly has now withdrawn from the tournament on the grounds of a medical condition. Despite this, it has been confirmed Daly will be teeing up at the Barbasol Open in Kentucky next week instead.

In his place, Kevin Streelman will now be playing at Portrush – and took to social media to share just how informal the exchange had been to agree to a spot in the year’s final major.

The next three places on the reserve list are now: Rory Sabbatini (Slovakia), Brian Harman (USA) and Martin Kaymer (Germany).
