Mickelson comes out on top at Pebble Beach

AS expected, Phil Mickelson created a tasty slice of US PGA Tour history at Pebble Beach today by securing a record-equalling fifth AT&T Pro-Am victory at the expense of England’s Paul Casey.

Casey, two shots adrift with just two holes to play after bad light stopped play last night, needed to do something special on the final two holes while hoping for some ‘Lefty’ flop shots. Neither happened.

In fact both players finished par-par enabling Mickelson to not only level Mark O’Meara’s handful of AT&T wins but join Tiger Woods on 14 victories celebrated in California country.

Casey missed an eight foot birdie chance on the penultimate hole while his long eagle attempt at the par-5 18th ran six feet past and after watching Casey make his closing birdie to secure outright second, Mickelson made no mistake from a similar distance to close out a -7 65 to complete a three-shot victory.

Europe’s Ryder Cup star went into the final round holding a three-shot advantage and confident of clinching his third PGA Tour win but in the end was again left to reflect on what might have been – he’s an eight-time runner-up – while veteran Mickelson must be rubbing his hands in glee at the prospect of this summer’s US Open being played on the fabled Pebble Beach links…
