Adam Scott wins Australian PGA Championship

Adam Scott claimed his first victory in over three years at the Austrlian PGA Championship with a final round 69 to win by two shots

Adam Scott claimed his second Australian PGA championship with a final round 69, overcoming a strong challenge from New Zealand’s Michael Hendry to win by two strokes. 

“I’m pretty stoked, actually,” Scott said after his win. “I kind of grinded it out this week and I feel like I outsmarted the golf course a little bit, which feels good, and it was good enough to beat everyone.

“It’s been a long time between drinks for me and maybe only once or twice did the thought cross my mind that I’ll never win again. 

“It feels very good to win here, especially to finish the year off kind of winning at home.

The 2013 champion had begun the final round with a one stroke lead and quickly doubled his advantage with a birdie at the first to move to 11-under. 

That lead diminished quickly, though, after a run of six pars allowed the chasing back to narrow the gap, and a dropped shot at the eighth saw him fall back in to a share of the lead. 

Hendry, who was struggling with a rib injury, emerged as the key challenger, and took the outright lead with a birdie at the ninth.

But Scott soon recaptured momentum, adding a birdie at the 14th and an eagle at 15 to regain a two shot lead. Hendry once again came close to the lead with his own birdie at 16, but gave the shot back a hole later to keep the gap at two.

At the last, both Scott and Hendry failed to save par, but it was still enough for Scott to earn his 11th European Tour title. 

Australians Cameron Davis, Min Woo Lee, Wade Ormsby and Nick Flanagan finished in a tie for third alongside halfway leader Carl Yuan on ten under par, while two-time defending champion Cameron Smith was in a share of tenth on seven under.
