The Northern Trust marks the first event of the 2019 FedEx Cup Playoffs: Here’s how to watch and who to back this week

The PGA Tour heads to Liberty National in New Jersey this week for the first event of the FedEx Cup playoffs, where the top 125 players battle to improve their positions and extend their seasons for another week. 

Brooks Koepka just finished at the top of the Wyndham Rewards, a monetary bonus given to the top 10 players at in the FedEx Cup standings at the end of the regular season, and comes in to this event after his win at the WGC FedEx St Jude Invitational. 

He currently leads the way by 572 over Rory McIlroy, but with all of the World’s top 10 and increased points on offer, it’s still very much all to play for over the next few weeks.

Last year, Bryson DeChambeau surged to the top of the standings as he claimed the title by four shots, but who should you back this week?

The current FedEx Cup leader and World No.1. Koepka claimed the WGC FedEx St Jude Invitational for his third win of the season two weeks ago, which followed a T4 at The Open (his worst major finish of 2019). Ranks 4th scoring average, 6th birdie average, 9th for both GIR and SG: Tee to green, and 10th SG: Approach

Rory McIlroy: 11/1
Ranked second in the FedEx Cup standings. McIlroy held the overnight lead in Memphis but struggled on Sunday to settle for T4 – which was his 12th top 10 of the season (including wins at the Players Championship and RBC Canadian Open). Ranks 1st for scoring average, SG: Off the tee and SG: Tee to green, 3rd for birdie average, 12th for SG: Approach the green and 15th SG: Around the green.

Jon Rahm: 14/1
Rahm hasn’t finished worse than T11 in his last five starts, which includes a win at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, and a 7th place finish at the FedEx St Jude Invitational in his last start. Ranks 4th SG: Off the tee, 7th birdie average, 10th for scoring average and 13th for SG: Tee to green.

Justin Thomas: 18/1
Has been consistent over the past month, finishing 9th at the Scottish Open, T11 at The Open and T12 in Memphis. Top 10s in all three of his previous Northern Trust starts. Ranks 1st birdie average, 2nd for both SG: Approach and SG: Tee to green, 9th for scoring average and 11th for GIR.

Webb Simpson: 20/1
Back-to-back runner-up finishes (his third in his last five starts) heading to the Northern Trust, having jumped to ninth place in the FedEx Standings. T15 at Liberty National the last time the Northern Trust was played here. Ranks 2nd scoring average, 11th SG: Putting,, 13th SG: Approach, 14th SG: Tee to green and 19th SG: Around the green

Justin Rose: 20/1
Runner-up at liberty national in 2013. Hasn’t played a lot over the past few months, finishing 3rd at the US Open before a T20 at The Open and 11th place finish at the WGC FedEx St Jude. Ranks 5th SG: Putting, 6th Scoring average and 20th for SG: Approach.

Rickie Fowler: 20/1
T6 in his last start at The Open, which was his first top 10 since May. T9 at the Northern Trust the last time it was held at Liberty National. Ranks 11th Scoring average, 20th SG: Putting and 28th Birdie average. 

Tommy Fleetwood: 22/1
Followed up his runner-up Open finish with a T4 in Memphis – two of five worldwide top 10s this year. Ranks 7th scoring average, 11th SG: Tee to green and 13th SG: Off the tee

Patrick Cantlay: 22/1
Nine top 10s this season including a victory at Memorial, and bounced back from a T41 at the Open (due to a bad final round) with a T12 at the WGC FedEx St Jude. Wasn’t at Liberty National in ’13 but does have back-to-back top 10s in this event. Ranks 3rd scoring average and SG: Tee to green, as well as 9th for both birdie average and SG: Around the green, and 11th for SG: Off the tee and SG: Approach.

Tiger Woods: 25/1
Woods looked like he was struggling as he missed the cut at the Open and has teed up just five times since April (four of those being majors). His form is hard to judge, but he is a two time runner-up at Liberty National (’13, ’09) when it hosted the Northern trust.

Collin Morikawa: 45/1
T31 at the Wyndham Championship after his win at the Barracuda Championship, T4 at the John Deere and T2 at the 3M Open – and hasn’t finished worse than T35 in seven PGA Tour starts. First appearance at Northern Trust but has a scoring average of 68.735 so has more than proven he can contend at the top.

Adam Scott: 45/1
Champion the last time the Northern Trust was held at Liberty National in 2013. Struggled at the Open (MC) and WGC (T40), but he did have three consecutive top 10s before that at the PGA Championship, Memorial and U.S. Open. Ranks 5th SG: Approach, 7th SG: Tee to green, 10th SG: Around, 12th Scoring average and 18th for birdie average this season.
