Tour Championship: Who’s in and Who’s Out
Justin Thomas ensured the top spot in the FedEx Cup rankings with a convincing victory at Medinah, but there was more than just a trophy on the line for plenty of players at the BMW Championship.
69 players started the week all hoping to either play their way in to the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings, or retain their spots in order to play in the Tour Championship at East Lake.
Hideki Mastuyama was the biggest mover of the lot thanks to his third place finish, while Open Champion Shane Lowry went from in to out as he guaranteed he’d be joining Tiger Woods as the second major champion of 2019 to be missing the FedEx Cup finale.
Woods needed to finish inside the top 10 to make it but ended up in a tie for 37th with 2015 FedEx Cup Champion Jordan Spieth, who will miss the Tour Championship for the second year in a row.
Below, find out which three players made their way in, and who came up short…
IN: Hideki Mastuyama
Matsuyama set a new course record at Medinah on Friday with a nine-under 63, and while it was broken by winner Justin Thomas just a day later, he added a second 63 to his tournament on Sunday, earning him third spot at 20-under-par. Despite finishing five shots behind Thomas, the big silver lining was that Mastuyama moved himself outwith the top 30 to inside, moving from number 33 to 15.
IN: Lucas Glover
Lucas Glover opened up the BMW Championship with a 66 and followed it with three consecutive 69s at Medinah to guarantee his spot at East Lake. He moved from 41st to 29th in the standings after his T7 finish, despite finishing bogey, double bogey, par.
IN: Jason Kokrak
Kokrak needed to birdie the final hole to be in with a chance of making it to the Tour Championships, so he stuck his approach to three feet and made the putt, finishing tied for 19th on 11-under and moving from 32nd spot to 30th – helped a little by JT Poston’s final hole bogey.
OUT: Shane Lowry
The Open Champion started the week at 25th in the FedEx Cup standings, but a 68 and 69 over the weekend couldn’t undo the damage of a second round 74, leaving him at 33rd in the rankings and out of next week.
OUT: Andrew Putnam
Putnam was the all important number 30 heading in to this week, but one too many bogeys dropped him to 34th after a T43 finish on six-under.
OUT: Harold Varner III
After last week’s T3 moved him to 29th, Varner III failed to hold on to that momentum and finished 68th out of the 69 players in the field this week. Rounds of 72,71,74,72 left him at +1, 26 shots behind Thomas, and in 38th place in the FedEx Cup.
