Zach Johnson’s hilarious Masters moment is a must see

Zach Johnson was making a practice swing on the 13th tee when he accidentally clipped his ball, which then richochetted off the marker and forward a few yards. 

His playing partner Ian Poulter summed it up perfectly for everyone: “I’ve never, ever seen that!”

Fortunately for Johnson, because it was a practice swing it didn’t count and he was able to re-tee up the ball, and went on to make a birdie four.

Unfortunately for Johnson, social media is an unkind beast and noone is going to let him forget it in a hurry. 

“Shoot, they got that?” Johnson asked the media after his round. 

“Yeah, that was a good one there. That’s a first. I thought I had done it all but now I know I’ve done it all. Shoot, they got that?

I didn’t know? Oh. Well maybe it’s a fine. Well, I mean I was, I was caught off guard. I actually hit a really good tee shot after that, so I think I recovered nicely. Even when I tried to slice it, I still hook it. That’s kind of the joke of the group. I mean, toe push into the tee marker and then, you know, it was a nice little four foot draw it turned out. So, yeah.

Poulter was delighted that everyone had seen it 

“Oh, it was a beauty,” Poulter said afterwards. “I thought he would get on the highlight. Now we have got the opportunity, I never looked at every shot, it will be interesting to see if they have got it on pretape so I can actually have a look at it. I was going for a drink in my bag and then I heard the ball clip and then clip the end of his club just on a practice swing, hit the tee marker and moved and we had a bit of a chuckle.

“So it’s probably the only hole you can do it and not get much of a, too much of a laugh because no one’s there to have a laugh about it. But, yeah, it was a bit of a shock to him and all of us.

“I’ve done it. We’ve all done it. It was just, it’s just going to be quite interesting, it’s going to be quite funny, because we can actually have a look at the highlights and view it. Have you guys seen it? On the re‑run? Love it. Can’t wait.

“I told him if it wasn’t (on the internet) I’m going to be putting it on there anyway. It was quite funny, because he backed off and said, no, no, guys, it’s okay, you can laugh, it was pretty funny. I mean, we were trying to hold it in, but he, we had to let it out. It was great.”

So what’s the rule if you hit accidentally hit your ball on your practice swing? 

Under the 2019 update to the rules of golf, that stroke does not count and you can replace the ball.

It says: The player’s action does not count as a stroke if:
• During the downswing, a player’s clubhead separates from the shaft. The player stops the downswing short of the ball, but the clubhead falls and strikes and moves the ball.
