The Dunvegan Hotel: Stunning revamp to one of golf’s most famous 19th holes

Right on cue for Masters week, one of golf’s most iconic 19th holes has had a stunning revamp that comes with a Bobby Jones theme

The Dunvegan Hotel is only about a wedge shot away from the 18th hole of The Old Course in St.Andrews, and has become a must-visit destination for the travelling golfer.

And now the iconic spot, which sits on the corner of Pilmour Place, has undergone a couple of big transformations that include a completely newly revamped restaurant and a new permanent Bobby Jones themed room with pieces from renowned local artist David Joy.

When you head in to The Dunvegan Hotel, there is a small room on the right hand side that has always been adorned with illustrations of famous moments and portraits of golfers by Joy. But now, right in time for the Masters, the hotel has unveiled a dedicated room to Masters Tournament founder and 13-time major winner Bobby Jones, filled with history and pictures of his career, while past portraits of champions still feature on the walls.

The new room showcases Bobby Jones, how he fell in love with the town of St Andrews and The Old Course, and the ceremony of when he was honoured with the freedom of the town.

“We choose to create a room dedicated to Bobby Jones as he was the second person after Benjamin Franklin to be honoured with the freedom of St. Andrews,” says manager Lucy Fotheringham, who along with her brother Luke has overseen the renovations.

“We decided to partner up with David joy for the project as he is long term friend of The dunvegan and an acclaimed Golf historian and artist, while the room will also showcases his parade of champions that have been featured in the room for years.”

“It also now features comfortable seating and two large flat screen TV’s so visitors can watch all the action this week.”

In addition to the new Bobby Jones room, The Claret Jug restaurant, which has proved popular with players and celebrities over the years, has been completely modernised with new wooden floor and furniture.

The Dunvegan Hotel, which is owned by a couple of Canadian golf enthusiasts who love St Andrews, took over from Jack and Sheena Willoughby in 2017, although the owners of 23-years still fly the flag for one of the town’s most infamous places.
