Ryder Cup teams finalised as Finau given final wildcard pick

Jim Furyk chose Tony Finau as his final wildcard pick for the United States Ryder Cup team on Monday, completing his 12-man line-up 

Finau recorded his third top 10 in a row at the weather delayed BMW Championship, shooting all four rounds in the 60s to end up in a tie for 8th place with Rickie Fowler, Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood – who will all be joining Finau in Paris later this month.

Following the tournament, which was won by Keegan Bradley, Captain Furyk named Finau as his final wildcard pick, saying it was ‘impossible’ not to choose him given his results over the past year and current form. 

Finau, who finished in the top 10 of three of the year’s four majors, joins fellow wildcards Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Byrson DeChambeau as part of the 12-man American team, which includes six of the World’s top 10 players. 

“He has an unbelievable body of work this year,” Jim Furyk said. “All those top-10 finishes, the play in big championships and majors, and his current form, a second, a fourth and an eighth in the [FedEx Cup] play-offs. He checked a lot of boxes and made it impossible not to go for him.” 

Finau, who will be just the third rookie in the team with Justin Thomas and DeChambeau, called it a dream come true and took to social media to express how honoured he was to have been chosen. 

It’s a dream come true,” said Finau. “I got the goosebumps when Jim told me.”

With the addition of Tony Finau, both teams have now been completed, between them boasting all the World’s top 10 players in the rankings – including newly crowned World No.1 Justin Rose.
