Oli Fisher shoots first ever 59 on European Tour

Oli Fisher earned a place in the golfing history books today when he became the first-ever European Tour player to break the 60 barrier.

Fisher, who turned 30 last week, handed himself a belated birthday present with a record-breaking score of 59 in the second round of the Portugal Masters.

It was the performance and round of a lifetime by Fisher who registered ten birdies and an eagle in his bogey-free 12-under-par, history-making 59 over the Victoria course in the Algarve.

Previously 19 players had carded rounds of 60 on the European Tour and Fisher came within a whisker of emulating Jim Furyk’s 58 on the PGA Tour in 2016 – his putt on the 18th green agonisingly grazed the hole and stayed above ground! There have been almost 700,000 rounds on the European Tour before any beat 60.

Fisher is currently placed 287 in the world rankings and, to date, his only European Tour success saw him lift the Czech Open seven years ago.

Said an overjoyed Fisher: It feels great, and it was fun, I tried to enjoy it and thankfully got over the line.

“I started off with three straight birdies and then kept it going. I’m just pleased that I two-putted from 40ft on the last.

“It was very different to a couple of years ago on this green fighting to keep my card. I had that in the back of my mind.”
