Jason Day claims 12th PGA Tour win at Wells Fargo Championship

Jason Day picked up his second PGA Tour title of the year, holding on for a two-shot victory at the Wells Fargo Championship on Sunday

It wasn’t an easy victory by any means, but Jason Day battled against his swing at Quail Hollow and put together a late birdie run on The Green Mile to claim his 12th PGA Tour victory. 

Day, who admitted he was fighting demons out on the course on Sunday, littered his scorecard with four bogeys (more than he’d made in the previous three rounds) while being chased down by Aaron Wise. 

A three shot lead quickly evaporated after back-to-back bogeys on the 14th and 15th holes, and suddenly Day found himself as co-leader with Wise, and the infamous Green Mile stretch still to play. 

After finally finding his first fairway in three holes on the 16th with an enormous drive, Day put his approach shot to just over 10 feet and holed his putt to once again get himself out in front. On the 17th, Day took out his 7 iron, and nearly holed out for an ace. 

“When I hit it, it was on a cracking line, it was beautiful,” he said. “And then it just had this massive bounce, hit on the downslope and fortunately hit the pin, which was nice, and went to about two or three feet. Things like that are what you need to win golf tournaments.”

With a two shot leading heading down the final hole, an up and down for par was all Day needed to secure his second victory of the season (after winning the Famers Insurance Open in February). And he said it was probably one of the best wins he’d ever had. 

“I had no idea where the ball was going today, especially off the tee,” Day said. “I missed a lot of fairways, missed a lot of greens. My short game stood the test, which is nice.

“This is probably one of the best wins I’ve ever had, just because of how hard everything was today.”

“I said earlier I was fighting demons out there, because when you’re not hitting it good, it just feels like the life is getting sucked out of you,” Day said. “Just feels like you don’t have – the confidence is starting to dwindle, but you know that you’ve just got to keep pushing. I know that I have a lot of fight in me.”

Day who was the only player to card four rounds in the 60s, moves in to 2nd position in the FedEx Cup rankings after his victory, and back in to the World’s top 10.

Wise, who shot a 68 during the final round, finished in a tie for second after Day’s playing partner Nick Watney holed an monster putt of 58 feet for birdie – and Day was just as happy for Watney as he was.

Bryson Dechambeau finished solo fourth, while England’s Paul Casey was the top European on seven under for a share of fifth alongside Americans Phil Mickelson and Peter Uihlein.
