Tiger Woods positive he can win more majors despite MC

Despite a strong finish to get back to 10-over-par, Tiger Woods missed his third-ever cut at a US Open; though he is still confident he will win more majors. 

His first appearance in a US Open since 2015 will end prematurely after Woods failed to limit mistakes over the first two days at Shinnecock Hills, leaving him two shots outside of the cut line to miss his third ever cut at a US Open. 

Adding a two-over 72 to his first round 78, Woods currently sat 14 shots adrift of playing partner and leader Dustin Johnson, and despite back-to-back birdies on his final two holes the 14-maajor won’t be playing at the weekend in New York. 

“I’m not very happy with the way I played or putted,” said Woods after Friday’s round. “I’m 10 over par. You can’t be too happy or excited about 10 over par.”

“You don’t win major championships slapping it around . . . You just can’t fake it in a major championship.”

“I gave myself enough looks. I haven’t made anything the last two days”

Having carded an eight-over 78 during a brutal first day at Shinnecock Hills, Tiger needed to post a steady round in order to guarantee he would be joining playing partners Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas over the weekend at the US Open.

And he got off to a positive start. Woods hit his first fairway (the 10th) of the day before sticking a wedge in close and holing the putt for birdie to move to +7 for the tournament.

He responded to a dropped shot on the 14th with a birdie on the 16th (his seventh hole) before struggling on the 18th hole to drop back to level par for the day. 

Woods was in need of a few birdies but instead found himself at 11-over-par walking off his 11th hole of the day, having gone double-bogey, bogey on the same holes he went triple, bogey at the day before. 

Another dropped shot on the 6th hle pushed Woods to 12-over and seemingly completely without a chance of making it through the cut. But while big putts on his final two holes for back-to-back birdies pulled him back to +10, they still likely won’t be enough to compound the earlier mistakes on his back nine. 

This missed cut will be his eighth cut in a major championship and his 18th overall on the PGA Tour as a professional.

But even though he was disappointed in his performance at Shinnecock, when asked if he thinks he can win another major, he remains confident. 

“Absolutely,” Woods said. “Have you seen the way I’ve been swinging?”
