Sergio Garcia storms to five-shot victory at Singapore Open

Sergio Garcia cruised to a five-shot victory in his first tournament of the year at the SMBC Singapore Open.
The Spaniard played 27 holes during the final day of the weather affected SMBC Singapore Open, not dropping a single shot as he sealed a five shot victory at the Sentosa Golf Club.
After storm delays on the first three days, Garcia returned to the course early on Sunday to complete his third round – standing two shots adrift of joint-leaders Chapchai Nirat and Danthai Boonma.

The Masters Champion began his round with back-to-back birdies, before adding two more gains at the par three 14th and 17th holes to put him one stroke clear of Nirat and Boonma heading in to the final round.
He opened the fourth round with another birdie, and added two more at the seventh and eighth to put a good distance between himself and the remainder of the field. Garcia followed it up with 10 straight pars to card a final-round 68, convincingly winning his 33rd professional victory.
“I played nicely but it wasn’t easy,” said Garcia. “There were some very challenging holes but I played very well and then was just steady on the back nine to make sure I wasn’t making any bogeys.
“It was a great week overall. You still need to hit a lot of good shots to do well here and I was able to do that. Hopefully I can ride on this momentum.”
“I’m extremely happy with how the week went. It was a tough day and a tough week, with the stopping and going. Fortunately, the weather held on. Still, it was hard to play 27 holes under this heat and I can’t wait to get a cold shower,” Garcia said.
The event, which also doubles up as one of the Qualifying Series Events for The Open at Carnoustie, saw four players book their spots in Scotland later this year – reserved for four players who had yet to qualify for the major.
Danthai Boonma and Jazz Janewattananond of Thailand finished joint fourth to secure their spots, while American Sean Crocker finished sixth and Australia’s Lucas Herbert eighth to qualify for the 147th Open at Carnoustie in July.
