Jason Day wins Farmers Insurance open play off

Jason Day triumphed on the sixth play-off hole against Alex Noren to win the delayed Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines on Monday.
Having been forced to finish the event on Monday after play was suspended due to darkness following a tie at the fifth play-off hole, Alex Noren and Jason Day headed down the par-five 18th one more time in a bid to separate themselves at the top.
Noren’s drive gave him a slight advantage just off the fairway on the left hand side, while Day’s ball lay in the right hand rough. Noren elected to go for the green but his ball came up a couple of yards short and rolled back in to the water, giving Day a big opportunity to put pressure on the Swede.
The former World No.1 went on to lay up then stick his third shot in to around a foot away from the pin, his birdie being enough to earn him his 11th PGA Tour win and first victory since the 2016 Players Championship.
After his round, Day said: “It’s been a long time coming. I know last year wasn’t the greatest season for me, and I had some stuff off course that was a little distracting with my mother obviously having cancer.”
“It’s special because I worked very hard in the off-season to get back to this position and I realised I had a chance this week. Obviously going back to earlier this week I never thought I was going to actually play because of my back but I’m just very thankful to my whole team. We just had to stay patient and obviously my goal is always to try get back to No.1 so this is a good start in the right direction.”
“I was up all night last night just thinking about trying to get that next win which was number 11 and I’m really happy. I had my best mate on the bag and it was a nice way to go.”
