Former NFL quarterback Tony Romo to play PGA Tour event

Tony Romo, the Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, is set to make his PGA Tour debut in the Dominican Republic next month after receiving a sponsor’s invite to appear at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship.
Romo – who is playing as an amateur in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am this week – has been given a sponsor’s exemption to the event, which is staged directly opposite the WGC-Cadillac Match Play from March 22-25.
The 37-year-old is the second athlete from another sport to gain a sponsor’s exemption in to an event in less than six months, following the NBA’s Steph Curry – who played in a Web.Com event last August, shooting consecutive two-over-par 74s.
Romo, who has tried to qualify for the US Open a couple of times, plays off a handicap of 0.3 and is relishing the opportunity to appear.
“As a professional athlete, the love and thrill of competition never entirely leaves you,” Romo said ahead of appearing in California this week. “Outside of my family and football, golf is one of my greatest passions.
“Playing and competing in a PGA Tour event is a dream come true. I am grateful to the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship for giving me an incredible opportunity to test my skills against some of the best on Tour.”
