Bronte Law breaks all time Ladies European Tour record

With the Solheim Cup in her sights, Bronte Law broke an all-time Ladies European Tour record during the third round of qualifying school with nine birdies in a row.

Law posted a course record-tying 10-under par 62 during the third round of Lalla Aicha Tour School at Amelkis Golf Club on Tuesday, claiming the outright lead after 54 holes of the 90 hole marathon event.

Her Ladies European Tour record-breaking feat of nine birdies in a row began on the 4th hole after back-to-back bogeys and ended on the 13th, during a round that included three other birdies and four pars.

“It was just one of those days where you create some chances and the ball starts going in the hole,” Law said after her round in Morocco. “It was my best round ever to date so really really happy with that.

Asked how she felt after 13, Law said she hadn’t wanted to settle for just nine in a row.

“I kind of just wanted to push on and keep making more. Obviously it’s always fun making birdies but when you make that many it can be difficult to keep your concentration, and my caddie really helped me out and gave me some incentives out there.

“I still had plenty of the round to go so I had to keep pushing and made a couple more birdies on the way in too which was nice.

“I had three tap-ins, which makes a difference. I started to see a couple of putts go in and once you see some putts go in, you believe that the lines you’re picking are good lines. It was nice to feel confident over the ball.”

It put the 23-year-old English woman to the top of the leaderboard, where she still remains after the fourth round, two shots ahead of Linnea Strom (Swe) and 10 shots clear of third place Sian Evans (Eng).

But getting her card is only part of the incentive for Law this week. She’s already ranked inside the World’s top 70 and recorded five top 10s on the LPGA Tour this season, but is at LET Q-School aiming to gain her card and become eligible for Solheim Cup selection at Gleneagles next year.

Like the Ryder Cup, Solheim Cup players are required to be members of the European Tour in order to be considered for selection for their side. This year Law is bidding to catch the eye of Catriona Matthew and follow in the footsteps of Madelene Sagstrom, who picked up her LET card at Q-School and was then chosen by Annika Sorenstam for the 2017 contest.

After 90 holes, the top five finishers will earn category 5c LET membership, which will allow them entry into most tournaments. Players who finish sixth to 25th will play out of category 8. Players who make the cut and finish 26th or lower will also earn LET status.
