Rickie Fowler withdraws from Northern Trust with injury

Rickie Fowler has withdrawn from the first stage of the FedEx Cup playoffs with an oblique strain

During last week’s PGA Championship, Fowler admitted that he had an injury while playing at Bellerive, but that he was going to play through the pain.

“I’m playing with it, no excuses,” Fowler had said at the time. “It hurts from time to time but that’s the way it is.”

He ended up finishing T12 after a disappointing final round 71, and it now turns out it was worse than he let on. Fowler posted to instagram on Wednesday that the injury is forcing him to miss the first event of the three-series FedEx Cup playoffs, but he is positive about being ready to play in the Ryder Cup.

“News got out last week that I was dealing with an oblique injury the past two tournaments…it was confirmed yesterday, via MRI, that I have a partial tear in my right oblique…

“my team and I feel like it’s best not to play next week in the Northern Trust…

“I will be back healthy and competitive ASAP for the FedEx Cup and more than ready for the Ryder Cup!!”
