Dell Technologies Preview: Betting Tips & How To Watch

The second leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs takes place at TPC Boston this week for the Dell Technologies Championship.

Justin Thomas returns as defending champion this week and currently sits in third place in the FedEx Cup standings after Bryson DeChambeau dislodged Dustin Johnson as leader with his win at The Northern Trust.

Yet there’s a lot more at stake this week than getting to the top of the FedEx Cup rankings. With a field of 100 players and just 70 making it through to the BMW Championship next week, many players are in need of good results – including the likes of Tyrrell Hatton, Matt Kuchar and Charley Hoffman.

It’s also a crucial time for the Ryder Cup hopefuls. The top eight of Team USA are already confirmed while the European top eight gets finalised on Sunday, but with the Dell Technologies not a counting event, players will be hoping to impress for a wildcard pick. Team USA captain Jim Furyk will name his first three wildcards the day after the Dell Technologies Championship, while European Captain Thomas Bjorn will unveil all four of his picks at 2pm on Wednesday, September 5.

Paul Casey, Henrik Stenson and Rafa Cabrera Bello are among the Europeans hoping to make a statement this week, while Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Tony Finau, Bryson DeChambeau, Xander Scahuffele, Kevin Kisner and Zach Johnson are all battling for one of the four spots in team USA.

Stenson is one of the players to come back from injury this week, while Rory McIlroy returns after taking a week off to practice. Rickie Fowler, the 2015 champion here, won’t be teeing up however, after pulling out for the second week in a row with an oblique injury.

Unlike most tour events, the Dell Technologies takes place from Friday – Monday, finishing on Labour Day.

Finished T11 last week, which follows a T27 at the PGA Championship. Prior to that, DJ had had two wins and three other top-eight finishes in his previous six starts. A best result of T4 here in both 2012 and 2009, and ranks 1st for SG: off the tee, SG: Tee to green, Scoring average, Birdie Average, Putting Average and all three of par-three, par-four and par-five scoring.

FedEx Cup Position: #3

Coming to TPC Boston as defending champion and just followed up victory at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational with a T6 at the PGA Championship and T8 at the Northern Trust last week. Ranks 2nd on Tour for Scoring Average, SG: Tee to green and 3rd for SG: Approach the green, 5th for Putting Average and 6th for Birdie Average. 

Brooks Koepka: 12/1
FedEx Cup Position: #5

Finished in a tie for 8th last week after his claiming his third major title at the PGA Championship. He’s had two wins and three other top 10s in just 12 starts in 2018, but his best result in three appearances at TPC Boston is a T18 last year. Ranks 5th Scoring Average, 6th Birdie Average and 9th SG: Off the tee.

Jason Day: 16/1
FedEx Cup Position: #8

Day posted a fifth consecutive top 20 at last week’s Northern Trust. He’s already had two victories this year and has a best finish of T2 at TPC Boston (’10), which is one of three top 10s here. Ranks 1st for SG: Putting, SG: Around the green and 8th for both Scoring and Birdie average. 

Rory McIlroy: 16/1
FedEx Cup Position: #28

McIlroy is a two-time winner and all-time leading money earner at TPC Boston, and tees up here after skipping the Northern Trust to assess where he was at and ‘work on’ his game following a T50 at the PGA Championship. Before that he’d finished tied 2nd at The Open and T6 at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational. He is a lock for the Ryder Cup already and ranks 6th for SG: Around the green, 9th for Scoring average and 14th for SG: Off the tee and SG: Tee to green. 

Tiger Woods: 20/1
FedEx Cup Position: #25

Woods had a disappointing T40 finish last week but insisted he played better than his scores showed, having had three other top 6s in his last five starts which included a 2nd place finish at the PGA Championship. Woods claimed the title at TPC Boston in 2006, and ranks inside the top 10 on Tour for SG: Tee to gree, SG: Approach the green and Scoring Average. 

Jordan Spieth: 22/1
FedEx Cup Position: #33

Currently outside the Tour Championship bubble and in need of a charge. Spieth scored his way in to contention after the third round last week before a bad final round – but he claimed he is close to being back to 100% with his putter. He finished 2nd here last year, and ranks 5th for Par 4 scoring, 7th for Scoring average (actual), and 12th for both greens in regulation and birdie average. 

Jon Rahm: 25/1
FedEx Cup Position: #17

Rahm is one of those players having a bizarre season. He’s had five top 5s and a victory in his last 11 starts, which also consists of three missed cuts – the latest being last week. However, he was T4 on his debut here last year, and ranks 2nd SG: Off the tee, 3rd for birdie average, 10th for greens in regulation and 14th Scoring Average (actual). 

Justin Rose: 25/1
FedEx Cup Position: #6

Ended a run of five straight top 10s with a T19 at the PGA Championship and his first MC of the year at the Northern Trust. He’ll be looking to bounce back this week at a venue where he finished 10th last year and had a best result of T3 (in 2003). He ranks 3rd for Scoring Average, 4th for Birdie Average, 8th for Putting Average and 11th SG: Tee to green. 

Tony Finau: 25/1
FedEx Cup Position: #4

Bidding for a place in the USA Ryder Cup Team, Finau finished 2nd last week – which was one of four top 10s in his last seven starts and moved him up to 4th in the FedEx Standings. His best finish here was T24 in 2016, and he ranks inside the top 15 on Tour for Scoring Average, Birdie Average and SG: Total. 

Adam Scott: 25/1
FedEx Cup Position: #40

Another player currently outside the Tour Championship top 30 bubble, but Scott has been playing well – finishing 3rd at the PGA Championship and T5 last week. He claimed the title here in 2003 and has six top 10s at TPC Boston. Ranks 7th for GIR and 16th for SG: Tee to green. 

Tommy Fleetwood: 30/1
FedEx Cup Position: #23

First time teeing up at TPC Boston, fresh off a T20 at The Northern Trust. Has gone T12-T6-T14-T35-T20 in his last few starts, and ranks inside the top 10 on Tour for Birdie Average, Scoring Average and SG: Tee to green. 

Bryson DeChambeau: 35/1
FedEx Cup Position: #1

Had been battling a shoulder injury a few weeks ago but still claimed the top spot in the FedEx Cup thanks to his second victory of the year at The Northern Trust, which followed up his MC at the PGA Championship. T30 on his debut here last year, and ranks inside the top 15 on Tour for SG: Tee to green, Scoring Average, Birdie Average and SG: Approach the green. 

Billy Horschel: 45/1
FedEx Cup Position: #14

Best finish of T2 here back in 2014, and comes in off the back of a T11 at the Wyndham Championship and T3 last week. Ranks 8th in GIR, 9th in par-five scoring and 18th SG: Off the tee. 

Phil Mickelson: 45/1
FedEx Cup Position: #10

Phil had a big week last week; joining twitter, smack talking Tiger and finishing T15 – his best result since a T12 at the FedEx St Jude Classic before the US Open. It comes at a good time for Mickelson, who is in the running for a Ryder Cup wildcard pick. He ranks 2nd SG: Putting, 4th for Birdie Average, 14th SG: Approach the green and 20th for Scoring average. 

Tyrrell Hatton: 60/1
FedEx Cup Position: #5

T20 at The Northern Trust was the result of a final-round best of the day 64, aided by the putter he bought from a golf shop the day before. He has three top 10s in his last seven starts, the most recent being a T10 at the PGA Championship. His debut at TPC Boston, and ranks 9th in overall putting average and 30th for scoring average. 

Outsiders

Both Paul Casey (50/1) and Patrick Reed (35/1) have gone off the boil a little bit the past few tournaments, having both missed the cut at the PGA Championship. However, Casey has gone T4-2 in his last two starts at TPC Boston, and Reed has gone T6-T5-T4. 

Meanwhile, Henrik Stenson (33/1) is returning from an injury that forced him out of two separate tournaments this year, but did win here in 2013 and has had six top 10s in 15 starts this year.
